Box Score 4 Dodge City baseball capped its week long Texas road trip to open the 2026 season by taking three of four games against Coastal Bend.
The Conquistadors opened the series against the Cougars with a convincing 14-2 win in six innings and capped day one of the series with a thrilling 14-13 comeback win. Conqs then took game three of the series 11-6 before falling 12-4 in the series finale.
The Conqs sit at 4-4 on the season after opening the season on the road in Texas, splitting a doubleheader with Dallas College North Lake, dropping matchups with #18 San Jacinto and #2 Blinn, and then taking three of four against Coastal Bend.
Game 1 – Won 14-2 vs Coastal Bend (6 innings)
The Conqs bats packed a punch from the start of the series as
Hunter Morgan led off with a triple to open the series, and a Coastal Bend error would bring him home to give the Conqs a 1-0 lead. Coastal Bend answered in the bottom of the first, plating two runs to snag the lead.
Sawyer Brinkman entered on the mound after Coastal Bend took the lead and would shut them down on the mound while the Conqs offense would have an outburst of seven runs in the fourth to regain the lead. In the fourth, the Conqs started the inning with a single, a walk, and a single to load the bases, and a
Will Soto double drove in two runs to start the scoring in the fourth.
Jonah Andrade followed with a two RBI single, while
Angel Vazquez notched an RBI single in the frame, and
Hunter Morgan belted a two-run home run, and the Conqs led 8-2. In the sixth, the Conqs expanded the lead highlighted by an RBI triple from Vazquez and a two RBI double from
Preston Harrison as the Conqs led 14-2 and secured the win in the bottom of the sixth.
Conqs pounded out 12 hits in the win as Morgan was 2-3 with three runs scored, two RBI, a home run, a triple, and a walk. Vazquez was 2-3 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a triple, while
Ben Longoria added a 2-3 game with two runs scored.
On the mound, Brinkman tossed four scoreless innings, not giving up a hit or walk, while striking out five.
Sam Spencer added two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Game 2 – Won 14-13 vs Coastal Bend
The second game of the series was perhaps the wildest of the four-game set, featuring 27 runs combined and a down-to-the-wire finish. The Conqs jumped out front early as Morgan singled to lead off the game and advanced around the base pads on an error coming in to score on a ground ball off the bat of
Ty Hamilton.
Preston Harrison also belted a two-run homer in the first as the Conqs led 3-0, but Coastal Bend countered with three runs in the bottom of the first. In the second inning, the Conqs offense continued to manufacture runs as Morgan had an RBI double and an RBI single by
Nic Cipolla and Andrade to lead 7-3 entering the bottom of the second. Coastal Bend once again had an answer, plating six in the second and two in the third to lead 11-7.
In the fourth and fifth, the Conqs chipped away at the deficit behind the home run ball with solo home runs by Andrade,
Cameron Stukenborg, and then another run in the sixth off an RBI double to pull within two at 12-10. The Conqs tied the game at 12-12 in the seventh as Morgan belted a solo home run to lead the inning off, and Cipolla drove in the tying run on a single.
Lex Lummus and Stukenborg each delivered RBI singles in the top of the ninth to give the Conqs the lead at 14-12. After two quick outs in the bottom of the ninth, Coastal Bend hit a solo home run to keep things alive, but the Conqs induced a groundout to cap the game and earn the 14-13 victory.
On the mound,
Cameron Stewart tossed 4.1 innings of strong scoreless relief to earn the win, giving up just two hits and a walk, while striking out four.
Connor Lovin earned the save, tossing the ninth.
Offensively, the Conqs had a massive 21 hits with six guys having multi-hit games. Morgan was 3-7 with three runs scored, two RBI, a double, and a home run, while Stukenborg was 3-5 with two runs scored, two RBI, a walk, and a home run. Andrade and Cipolla both went 3-5 at the plate, and Harrison was 3-6 with three runs scored, two RBI, a double, and a home run.
Game 3 – Won 11-6 vs Coastal Bend
Morgan, for the third straight game, opened the action for the Conqs with a hit as he belted his third home run of the series, giving the Conqs the early lead. The lead expanded in the third with three more runs and then four more in the fourth. Coastal Bend broke through with a pair of runs in the fourth and then would score three in the sixth after the Conqs got one in the top of the sixth inning. A
Jordi Guerrero two-run home run in the top of the seventh helped the Conqs get some insurance runs as Coastal Bend continued to fight in the bottom of the seventh but managed just one run as the Conqs won 11-6.
The bottom of the order for the Conqs led the offense as Soto, Guerrero, and Vazquez each had a pair of hits, while Cipolla added a two-hit game. Guerrero was 2-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a home run, and Vazquez went 2-3 with three runs scored and a walk.
Austen Raines earned the win on the mound, throwing strong five innings, giving up two unearned runs on three hits.
Game 4 – Lost 12-4 vs Coastal Bend (7 innings)
The series finale saw the Conqs fall behind and be unable to keep the bats rolling like earlier in the series. Coastal Bend grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second with two runs and then scored four in the third and fourth innings each. The Conqs got on the board with three runs in the fourth as Harrison had an RBI double, and Cipolla belted a two-run home run. Stukenborg blasted a solo home run in the seventh, but Coastal Bend answered with a run in the seventh to end the contest in seven innings at 12-4.
Harrison led the Conqs at the plate, going 2-3 with a run scored, a double, and an RBI, while five other Conqs had a hit.
Up next, the Conqs will be at home for the first time in the 2026 season as they will host Dawson CC on Thursday, February 12th, in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm, and then will host Dawson CC again on Tuesday, February 17th, for a twinbill.
