Back on the diamond Friday, after opening the season the day prior, the Dodge City softball team packed a strong offensive punch and received strong pitching outings to earn 9-2 and 11-1 victories over Frank Phillips.
The Conquistadors, with their victories, moved to 3-1 to open the 2026 season, while winning the last nine meetings against Frank Phillips and 17 of the last 19 meetings between the two teams.
Game 1 – Won 9-2 vs Frank Phillips
The day would start with both teams having their first batter reach safely in the first inning, but neither team was able to get on the scoreboard. In the second inning, Frank Phillips took advantage of a leadoff walk by belting a two-run homer to grab the early lead. The Conqs answered, sending eight to the plate in the bottom of the second and using two hits and three walks to score two runs to draw even. In the third,
Riley Moore blasted a three-run home run for the Conqs to send them in front, and then in the fourth,
Karli George tattooed a three-run home run, giving the Conqs an 8-2 lead. Conqs scratched another run across in the sixth and went on to secure the 9-2 win.
Shyann Clark was solid in the circle, earning the win, tossing all seven innings, giving up just two runs on eight hits and three walks, while striking out three.
Moore led the Conqs offense as she was 2-3 with a home run, three RBI, a double, and a walk.
Cadie McCracken added a 1-3 game with two runs scored, while
Karen Galaviz had a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. Dezerae Schmidt chipped in a 1-3 game with an RBI and a stolen base.
Game 2 – Won 11-1 vs Frank Phillips (5 innings)
Conqs wasted no time getting the offense rolling in game two against Frank Phillips as eight Conqs came to the plate in the first, leading to three runs. A two RBI double by Cameron Moses and an RBI double by
Avery McCloskey highlighted the first for the Conqs. The second inning saw the Conqs continue to work around the base pads as
Kloe Nelson and
Jordyn Boxberger both notched two RBI singles to make it 7-0 for the Conqs. In the top of the third, Frank Phillips worked a pair of runners on via walks and got a hit to drive in a run, but settled for just one. The Conqs answered in the bottom of the third, scoring two as
Harley Shoaf hit a triple and then scored on a throwing error, while Galaviz then belted a solo home run. Two more runs came in for the Conqs in the bottom of the fourth, and then they would shut the door on the game in the top of the fifth to earn the run rule 11-1 victory in five innings.
McCloskey picked up the win in the circle as she threw all five innings, giving up just one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out four.
Conqs pounded out 13 hits in the win as Moore was 2-3 with two runs scored, a double, and two stolen bases. Boxberger added a 2-2 showing at the plate with two RBI, while McCracken added a 2-2 with three runs scored, a double, and a walk.
Paityn Tenbrink,
Danica Miller, Shoaf, McCloskey, Nelson, and Galaviz each had a hit, giving everyone who had a bat for the Conqs at least one hit in the game.
Up Next, the Conqs hit the road to compete at the Winter Blast Tournament in Denison, Texas, as they are set to take on four ranked opponents: #3 Grayson, #7 Paris, #18 Seminole State, and #21 Rose State.
