Box Score 4 For the second straight year, Dodge City volleyball hosted the Victory Electric Classic. This year, the tournament was packed with high-caliber action from start to finish.
The Victory Electric Classic featured six nationally ranked teams with seven total teams competing in 14 total matches played. The Conquistadors finished the weekend going 2-2 in action. On Friday, the Conqs would fall 3-0 (26-28, 24-26, 21-25) to #14 Eastern Arizona and lost 3-0 (14-25, 14-25, 16-25) against #2 Miami Dade. Saturday fortunes turned in the favor of the Conqs as they picked up a pair of wins beating Lee 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-20) and wrapped up the Victory Electric Classic with a thrilling five set 3-2 (25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 18-25, 16-14) win over #11 New Mexico Military Institute.
Lost 3-0 vs #14 Eastern Arizona
The Conqs would start the tournament strong against Eastern Arizona, working out to a 6-1 lead as
Kayla Cantrill had a pair of early aces. The lead would stay with the Conqs until late in the first set when Eastern Arizona tied the set up at 22-22, and the matchup would go back-and-forth the rest of the way into extra points and Eastern Arizona used a challenge late, helping them grab the first set 28-26. Set two saw Eastern Arizona hold the lead, and the Conqs would make a late push, and a
Sunni Skipps ace would tie the match at 24-24, but Eastern Arizona tallied the final two points to take the second set 26-24. The third set would see Eastern Arizona keep the Conqs at arm's length throughout the set, leading to a 25-21 final in the set.
Eight kills each by Cantrill and
Amariah White led the Conqs in the loss, while
Chelsea Durbridge finished with 25 assists, six digs, and two kills.
Lost 3-0 vs #2 Miami Dade
After a 2-0 start to the match for the Conqs, it was Miami Dade that would control the matchup, working to a 14-8 advantage in the first set, and the lead would grow to double figures as the Sharks of Miami Dade took the first set 25-14. The second set would see Miami Dade quickly grab control, leading 6-2 as they once again would take the set 25-14. The third set would be tight early at 5-5, and then Miami Dade once again took control, ultimately taking the set 25-16.
Conqs struggled offensively with only 18 kills in the loss as White and
Allison Mason each had five kills. Durbridge tallied 18 assists and six digs, while
Mali Towers had six digs.
Won 3-0 vs Lee
Day two saw the Conqs come out strong as they opened the first set against Lee with an 8-1 start, leading to an early timeout by Lee. The lead ballooned to double figures in the first set at 12-2 and then 18-8, ultimately leading to a 25-10 first set. A little tighter early in the second set, the Conqs would once again push out the lead, working to a 20-9 advantage before grabbing the second set 25-15. The third set saw the Conqs start it 4-0 and lead 5-1 early, but Lee went on a 3-0 run to make it 5-4. However, the Conqs countered and would push forward all the way to a 25-20 third set win, grabbing their first win at the tournament this year.
Sunni Skipps had her first double-digit kill performance of her career with 11 kills along with four aces, while White tallied 10 kills.
Kamalei Wassman was strong at libero with 10 digs, while Durbridge finished with 37 assists.
Won 3-2 vs #11 NMMI
The final match of the tournament was electrifying and needed five sets to decide the outcome as the Conqs would top #11 New Mexico Military Institute in a thriller. The Conqs jumped out early in the first set with a 5-0 start to the set and would work to an 18-10 advantage before NMMI made a late surge to tighten up the set; the Conqs would secure the first set 25-22. The second set saw Cantrill lead a stretch for the Conqs with her serve recording three aces, and the Conqs led 15-7 on their way to the 25-18 second set. NMMI changed their fortune in the third set, starting the set by going up 4-1 and holding the Conqs off the rest of the set to take it 25-21. The fourth set would see NMMI again establish early control lead 6-1 and take it 25-18 to even up the match. In the fifth set, the Conqs fell behind 8-2 but would mount a 6-1 run to draw within one at 9-8. NMMI countered the Conqs' run by scoring three points in a row to lead 12-8, but a 5-0 Conqs run gave Dodge City their first lead at 13-12 in the fifth set. The next few points would be traded back-and-forth with the Conqs fending off match point by NMMI once and ending the match on a 3-0 run to win it 16-14 and take the match.
White had a career-high kills performance, recording 15 while hitting .344, while Cantrill also had her highest kill output with 16 and recorded a double-double with 12 digs, while adding three aces. Skipps added her best overall performance as a Conq with 11 kills and 12 digs. Durbridge was strong with 50 assists, 15 digs, and three kills.
Allison Mason finished with 11 digs and seven kills in the match. The Conqs had 56 kills as a team in the win.
Conqs are back on the road next week, competing in their final non-conference action of the regular season as they will travel to Gainesville, Texas, to compete at the North Central Texas College Invitational.
