Baseball Adds Pair of Coaches to Bolster Coaching Staff

August 18, 2025

Opportunities come in many ways at the junior college level and not just for student-athletes but also for coaches. The Dodge City baseball team is bolstering their coaching staff with the addition of a pair of volunteer coaches giving a pair of former college baseball players the opportunity to get into the coaching profession and gain experience.

Trevor Cones and Caeden Trenkle both come to Dodge City after playing college baseball and are eager to gain coaching experience. Cones played collegiately at Texas Lutheran University while Trenkle suited up for Oklahoma State University.

"We are thrilled to have two guys with their backgrounds that chose to join us as we continue to build a solid foundation here. They both bring quality playing experience with them as well as positive, hard-working personalities. The hardest part when interviewing applicants is making sure they are going to fit with what you already have, but with the recommendations we received for both guys, I think we hit the ball out of the park. I know they are both excited to hit the ground running this fall and make an impact on an extremely talented group of ball players," said Dodge City baseball Head Coach, JM Kelly about the additions of Cones and Trenkle to the coaching staff.

Trenkle a Hillsboro, Texas native graduated from Hillsboro High school in 2019 and was drafted in the 28th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Chicago White Sox but chose to attend Oklahoma State University. In three seasons at Oklahoma State, he would play in the outfield and anchor the top of the order. While dawning the Orange and Black, Trenkle hit .292 with 14 home runs, 133 hits, 112 runs scored, and 91 RBI in 131 games with 119 starts. He was a freshman All-American, an All-Big 12 honoree, and a 2022 Stillwater Regional All-Tournament team honoree. In 2022 MLB draft by the Oakland Athletics in the ninth round with the 274th pick. He would go on to play in the minor leagues from 2022 to 2025 where he would play in 245 minor league games recording 194 hits, 133 runs scored, 14 home runs, 27 doubles, 95 RBI, and a .236 batting average.

Trenkle is no stranger to the JUCO world as his father is a JUCO basketball coach and his uncle, Brady Trenkle spent time as a head coach and assistant coach for Dodge City for the Conquistadors men's basketball team (2008-12 – Brady Trenkle head coach for Conqs).

Cones spent five seasons as part of the baseball program at Texas Lutheran University where he roamed the outfield for the Bulldogs. The Stagecoach, Texas native graduated from Tomball High School in 2020 and while playing for the Cougars, was coached by current Conq Head Coach, JM Kelly. He was part of four district championship teams at Tomball High School.

Conqs will look to challenge in the KJCCC and NJCAA this year after a 32-25 record in year one under Head Coach, JM Kelly last year.
