Box Score 2 Dodge City baseball capped the regular season with a road doubleheader sweep of Seward County in a pair of offensive slugfests giving the Conquistadors the series winning three of the four games.
The Conqs earned the 15-12 win in game one and followed it up with a 16-14 game two win, moving the Conqs to 32-23 on the season and 15-16 in KJCCC. The Conqs would finish in sixth in the KJCCC West.
Up next the Conqs hit the road for postseason action as they will travel to KCK for the first round of the Region/District tournament. The first round will be a best-of-three series.
Game 1 – Won 15-12 at Seward County
The offense got things rolling early for the Conqs as
Jose Alfonso would drive in a run on a single in the first inning and both Juan Concecpion and
Josh McGuin would drive in runs on sacrifice flies, while
Ben Longoria capped the scoring in the first with an RBI single. The 4-0 lead didn't last long for the Conqs as they gave up four runs in the bottom of the first to see the game evened up. In the second the Conqs were back to swinging and
MD Conner drove in three with a bases-clearing double and the Conqs tacked on two more to lead 9-4. After a run in the bottom of the second by Seward County the Conqs tallied five more runs to lead 14-5. The Saints of Seward County would chip away at the Conqs' lead with two in the third and two more in the fourth before McGuin added a run for the Conqs on an RBI single in the fifth. Seward County again answered with three in the bottom of the fifth but both teams would be unable to score over the next two innings leading to the Conqs grabbing the 15-12 victory.
Conqs pounded out 18 hits with two players recording a four-hit game. Longoria was 4-5 with three RBI and a double, while Alfonso was 4-5 with three runs scored, two RBI, and a double.
Seth Brown added a 3-4 game with three RBI and Conner was 3-3 with five RBI, three runs scored, and two doubles.
Game 2 – Won 16-14 at Seward County
In the series finale, it was Seward County getting on the board first with three runs in the first inning. The Conqs however would have another offensive outburst in the second plating seven runs highlighted by a two RBI double from Brown along with RBI doubles from Conner and Longoria each. After two innings the Conqs held a 7-3 advantage, and that lead grew in the third with three runs as Brown had a two-RBI single and Conner an RBI single to make it 10-3. Seward County tallied two in the third, while the Conqs scored a run in the fourth and Seward County plated five to make it 11-10 after four innings. In the top of the sixth, the Conqs scored five more runs started by a two-RBI single from
Avery Phillips. Seward County would push back again getting three in the sixth and then one in the seventh but just like game one, the game would end with the final two innings being scoreless as the Conqs secured the 16-14 win.
Seven Conqs had a multi-hit game in the win led by Brown who was 3-6 with three runs scored, four RBI, and a double. Phillips added a 2-4 game with three runs scored, two walks, and two RBI, while
Jaxen Derry was 2-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Freddy Oquendo, Longoria, Conner, and Alfonso all each also had two hits in the win.
