Track & Field Competes at Region 6 Outdoor Championships

The outdoor track and field season continued as Dodge City competed against fellow Jayhawk Conference schools at the Region 6 Championships in Coffeyville. 
 
The Conquistadors would finish ninth as a team in the women's side of the competition with 32 points, while the men had 41 points and finished in 11th place as a team only seven points out of seventh place. Both the men and women would finish sixth in the KJCCC West standings. 
 
On the men's side of the competition, the Conqs saw Brenden Carter earn the top place at the meet as he took second in the high jump behind a leap of 2.02 meters (6'07.5"). Carter would also put together a sixth-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 13.65 meters (44'09.5"). 
 
In the throwing events, Tory Gethers claimed a third-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 51.97 meters (170'06"), while Matthew Garcia earned fourth in the shot put recording a third of 14.69 meters (48'02.5"). Dante Reid grabbed an eighth-place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.08 meters (151'02"). 
 
On the track for the Conq men Kasey Kopetic raced to a fourth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles posting a time of 14.47 in qualifying and 14.24 in the finals, while Albert House in the same event took eighth place with a time of 14.87 in qualify and 14.84 in the finals. Kopetic's time improved his own school record in the 110-meter hurdles. Josue Vega and Alex Teffu recorded sixth and eighth place finishes in the 5000-meter run with times of 15:12.42 and 15:37.77, while Teffu also took fifth in the 1500-meter run behind a time of 4:01.44. 
 
For the Conq women, the performance of Olivia Leatherman was a highlight on the weekend as she broke the school record in the heptathlon totaling 4,008 points over the seven events in the heptathlon. Her 4,008 points earned her third place in the region and currently ranks tenth in the NJCAA (top 16 point totals qualify for nationals). She would take second in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump events while finishing fourth in the javelin and 200-meter run. In the shot put, long jump, and 800-meter run Leatherman finished fifth. 
 
Leatherman also competed in the 100-meter hurdles outside of the heptathlon and took eighth place posting a qualifying time of 15.02 and then a time of 15.00 in the finals. 
 
The quartet of Ava Washington, Ivy Washington, Gracee May, and Sarai Chavez posted a time of 9:57.37 in the 4x800 meter relay to finish fourth in the event. Chavez added a pair of eighth-place finishes in the 800-meter run (2:26.86) and 1500-meter run (5:09.45). Ivy Washington also finished fifth in the 10,000-meter run (41:44.05), while Daniela Cerda took sixth in the same event (42:03.51). 
 
In the field events for the Conqs Sophia Calistro earned a seventh-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.38 meters (4'06.25"), while Bianca Gleim took eighth place in the long jump recording a leap of 5.23 meters (17'02"). 
 
The Conqs will compete one final time before the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships which are set for May 15th-17th in Hutchinson, as the Conqs will compete at the Shocker Open at Wichita State on Friday, May 9th.
