Box Score 2 Dodge City baseball pushed #17 Barton to the limit but settled for the series split after dropping a pair of tough contests in Great Bend falling 6-5 and 14-10.
The losses move the Conquistadors to 28-22 on the season and 12-16 in KJCCC action.
The Conqs will wrap up the regular season next with their final KJCCC series of the year taking on Seward County. Conqs open the series at home on Thursday, May 1st, and then will travel to Liberal to take on the Saints on Saturday, May 3rd.
Game 1 – Lost 6-5 at Barton
The Conqs would fall behind early surrendering three runs in the bottom of the first inning but have an answer in the second.
MD Conner belted a solo home run to get the Conqs on the board in the second inning and an RBI single by
Bynum Martinez made it a 3-2 contest. It would remain a one-run game until the fifth when the Conqs would take the lead plating three runs with a two-RBI single by
Cameron Stukenborg highlighting the inning giving the Conqs a 5-3 advantage. Barton would get a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but the Conqs maintained the lead at 5-4. In the sixth, the Cougars of Barton scored with a solo home run to tie the game at 5-5, and then in the bottom of the seventh Barton used a sacrifice fly to bring in the winning run giving them a 6-5 win.
In the loss, Conner paced the Conqs offense going 2-4 with a home run, while seven other Conqs had a hit in the contest. On the mound,
David Bosque tossed a solid four innings as the starter while
Cameron Stewart went 2.2 innings in relief.
Game 2 – Lost 14-10 at Barton
The series finale would be the highest-scoring game of the series as both teams started the scoring early. The Conqs plated two in the first on a sacrifice fly by
Jose Alfonso and an RBI single by
Josh McGuin, while Barton would score one run in the first making it 2-1 after the first in favor of the Conqs. Barton tied the game up with a run in the second, but the Conqs would work the bases loaded in the third and
Calvin Warrillow blasted a grand slam to push the Conqs in front 6-2. Barton would score the next four innings with two in the fourth to draw within one, two in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead, one in the sixth, and three in the seventh to extend their lead to 11-6. The Conqs would not go down without a fight as a two-RBI double by Alfonso would highlight a four-run eighth for the Conqs to make it an 11-10 contest. In the bottom of the eighth Barton countered with three runs and would hold the Conqs in the ninth as Barton won 14-10.
Alfonso had a strong performance for the Conqs going 2-3 with three RBI, a run scored, a walk, and a double. While
Josh McClintock finished 2-5 with a run scored, an RBI, and a double. Stukenborg tossed a solid 5.1 innings as the starter in the loss.
