Box Score 2 Dodge City baseball knocked off the top KJCCC West team in #17 Barton not once but twice to open the series against the Cougars at home winning 8-4 and 9-8, taking game two in walk-off fashion behind a grand slam by
Juan Concepcion.
The Conquistadors with the two wins made it five in a row in the series against Barton while improving to 28-20 on the season and 12-14 in KJCCC action.
Conqs will look to win the series on Saturday, April 26th when they take on Barton in Great Bend for a doubleheader to wrap up the series.
Game 1 – Won 8-4 vs Barton
The Conqs would fall behind early as Barton tallied a run in the first and second inning each to lead 2-0 but after holding the Cougars off the scoreboard in the top of the third the Conqs found their way in front. In the bottom of the third RBI singles by
Josh McClintock,
Calvin Warrillow, and
Jose Alfonso pushed the Conqs in front 3-2. Barton tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth with a run and then plated another on a solo home run in the fifth to regain the lead at 4-2. In the bottom of the fifth the Conqs batted around and used the long ball to grab the lead as
MD Conner belted a three-run home run and
Josh McGuin got into the party hitting a two-run home run for a five-run fifth inning.
Will David would sit the Cougars down in order in the sixth and then work around a double in the seventh to toss the complete game and help the Conqs earn the 8-4 win.
David was spectacular on the mound tossing a complete game to earn the win going seven innings giving up four runs on seven hits, two walks, and four hit batters while striking out four.
Conner, Warrillow, and Alfonso each had a multi-hit game to lead the Conqs offensively. It was a 2-3 with a home run, a run scored, and three RBI for Conner, while Warrillow was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Alfonso finished 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Game 2 – Won 9-8 vs Barton
Conqs would fall behind in game two behind early runs by Barton but had the comeback itch yet again. Barton tallied two runs in the first inning to grab the early lead, but
Caleb Tucker would settle in on the mound for the Conqs holding Barton off the scoreboard for the next five innings. Conqs broke through on the scoreboard in the fifth with an RBI single by
Bynum Martinez. It would remain 2-1 until the seventh when Barton plated two runs and then added two more in the eighth to lead 6-1. In the bottom of the eighth, the Conqs pushed back with two outs Concepcion belted a two-run homer and two batters later Martinez tattooed a two-run home run making it 6-5. The top of the ninth Barton added two insurance runs taking an 8-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth. The Conqs would get a single by McClintock and an infield single by
Cameron Stukenborg to open the ninth and an infield hit by Conner loaded the bases. Concepcion stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded and blasted a walk-off grand slam lifting the Conqs to the 9-8 win.
Tucker was great as the starter for the Conqs going 6.2 innings giving up four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four.
Cameron Stewart threw two effective innings out of the bullpen.
Concepcion finished 3-5 with two home runs, six RBI, and three runs scored to pace the Conqs offense. Martinez added a 2-4 game with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored, while McGuin was 2-4 with a double and a run scored. Conner finished 2-5 with a run scored, and Stukenborg was 2-3 with a run scored.
