Baseball Falls In Pair of Tough One Run Games at Colby

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Dodge City baseball wrapped up the conference series with Colby with a pair of games on the road and while the Conquistadors would battle with the Trojans down to the wire the Conqs fell 9-8 and 8-7. 

The Conqs with the losses fall to 18-15 on the season and 4-12 in KJCCC action. 

Up next the Conqs take on Hesston on the road on Tuesday, April 1st for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm and then KJCCC play continues against rival Garden City. The series against Garden City will start at home on Thursday, April 3rd. 

Game 1 – Lost 9-8 at Colby 
Conqs would find behind early as Colby scored three runs in the first inning, but the Conqs would respond throughout the contest and hold a lead late in the game. The Conqs would get on the board in the top of the second as Jose Alfonso and Cameron Stukenborg each notched an RBI double. A run in the third tied the game at 3-3 but Colby answered with a run in the bottom of the third to regain the lead. Three runs in the fourth swung the lead to the Conqs making it 6-4. Colby once again tied the game in the bottom of the inning scoring two in the fourth. In the fifth, the Conqs would score two for the fourth straight inning of scoring and would lead 8-6 entering the bottom of the seventh. Colby worked a pair of base runners on in the seventh and then belted a three-run home run to walk off game one of the day as the Conqs fell 9-8. 

Stukenborg and Seth Brown each had three hits on the day, while Bynum Martinez and Alfonso both added a multi-hit game. For Stukenborg it was a 3-4 game with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI, while Brown finished 3-4 with two RBI, a double, and a run scored. Martinez was 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Alfonso added a 2-2 game with three RBI, a double, a walk, and a run scored. 

Wyatt Sadleir, Cameron Stewart, and Marcos Santiago each saw action on the mound in the loss. 

Game 2 – Lost 8-7 at Colby 
The series finale saw the Conqs grab the early lead behind a three-run home run by Stukenborg after a walk by Ben Longoria and a single by MD Conner in the second. Colby would however score in the next three half innings at the plate with a run in the third and fourth inning each and three in the fifth to lead 5-3. In the sixth a Freddy Oquendo two RBI single tied the game up at 5-5 and the Conqs snagged the lead with a two-run home run by Alfonos in the seventh. Colby would get a run back in the seventh and two more in the eighth to give the Trojans an 8-7 advantage. The top of the ninth saw the Conqs worked the bases loaded with two outs but were unable to score falling 8-7. 

Stukenborg led the Conqs in the contest going 2-3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, three RBI, and a walk, while pitching 4.2 innings as the starter. 

Six other Conqs recorded a hit in the loss, while Caleb Tucker and Manuel Burguesa pitched in the contest.
