Box Score 4 On the road to open the season the Dodge City softball team traveled to Tishomingo, Oklahoma for a set of four games facing off with Coffeyville and #2 NJCAA DII, Murray State for two games each.
The Conquistadors opened the season with a tough 5-2 loss to Coffeyville and then fell to Murray State 11-1 in five innings to cap the first day of action. Day two saw the Conqs get their first win of the season pouring out 12 runs to win 12-8 over Coffeyville but then fell to Murray State 10-0 in six innings to finish the trip.
Game 1 – Lost 5-2 vs Coffeyville
The Conqs opened the season strong setting Coffeyville down in order in the top of the first and would get the team's first hit of the season in the bottom of the first inning, but the contest was scoreless after one inning. Coffeyville took the lead in the top of the second behind three runs capitalizing on a pair of Conq errors and then added two more in the third inning to lead 5-0. In the bottom of the fourth, the Conqs threatened to get back into the game working the bases loaded with singles by
Karen Galaviz and
Campbell Anderson and a walk by
Whitley Cash but were unable to score. In the bottom of the seventh, the Conqs finally broke through as
Josie Oakley belted a two-run home run but the comeback ended there as the Conqs dropped the season opener 5-2 to Coffeyville.
Galaviz led the Conqs with a 2-3 game, while Oakley was 1-3 with a run scored, 2 RBI, and a home run.
Rylie Miller and Anderson each added a hit.
Shyann Clark tossed three innings as the starter, while
Anistyn Marcotte finished the game tossing four scoreless innings of relief.
Game 2 – Lost 11-1 vs Murray State (5 innings)
It was a struggle to stay with host Murray State in game two. The Conqs fell behind early. The Aggies plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning and then added two runs in the second, third, and fourth innings each. The Conqs would get a run in the fourth inning, as Cash notched a double and scored on an error later in the frame. Ultimately, the Conqs' offense wasn't enough, falling 11-1 in five innings.
Cash and Galaviz each had a hit for the Conqs as they were the only two hits of the contest. Jordayn Boxberger and Oakley each tossed two innings of action in the loss.
Game 3 – Won 12-8 vs Coffeyville
It was early and often offense for the Conqs in the third game of the season which helped propel them to their first win of the year. A walk, single, Coffeyville error and a double in the first inning helped produce two runs for the Conqs highlighted by an RBI double from Cash. Coffeyville responded with a run in the bottom of the first but the Conqs countered in the second as Galaviz drove in a run after
Kloe Nelson led the inning off with a single. Coffeyville tied the game in the bottom of the third and then would take the lead in the same frame scoring five runs in the inning to lead 6-3 and then adding another in the fourth. In the fifth, a passed ball got the Conqs back on the board after working the bases loaded and then Galaviz brought in another run to make it 7-5. The sixth saw the Conqs regain the lead as Oakley recorded an RBI double and then
Kaylee Kinsinger brought in two runs on a single to make it 8-7. By the end of the sixth, the Conqs led 11-7 and then with another run in the seventh, the Conqs led 12-7. Coffeyville in the bottom of the seventh scratched a run across but the Conqs stopped the Red Ravens from scoring any more to secure the 12-8 win.
Conqs powered out 15 hits in the win led by Oakley's four-hit day as she was 4-5 with two runs scored, an RBI, and two doubles. Marcotte was 2-3 with three runs scored, two walks, and two doubles.
Riley Moore had a 3-5 performance with a run scored and
Elly Tancayo added a 2-4 game with two RBI, a walk, and a double. Boxberger earned the win in relief tossing five solid innings and giving up just three runs on three hits.
Game 4 – Lost 10-0 vs Murray State (6 innings)
The final game of the road trip was like game two the other contest against Murray State as the Conqs offense was stymied by the Aggies. After a scoreless first inning the Conqs saw Murray State get the first run of the game in the second inning and then have an offensive outburst with six runs in the third. It remained 7-0 until the bottom of the third when Murray State ended the game with a three-run home run to cap the contest 10-0 in six innings.
In the loss, the Conqs managed just one hit as Galaviz was 1-3, while
Campbell Anderson drew a walk. Marcotte, Boxberger, and Clark all saw action in the loss inside the circle.
The Conqs are back on the road to continue the season as they travel to Waco, Texas for the McLennan Festival at the Bosque River Ballpark on February 7th-9th. The Conqs will face Indian Hills, #12 Grayson twice, Southeastern, and #2 McLennan.
