Three national qualifiers and a pair of school records, along with several other strong performances highlight the Ichabod Invite in Topeka for the Dodge City track and field team to continue the indoor season.
Leading the way, day one saw a pair of big performances from the Conquistadors including the record-breaking performance of
Josue Vega. Behind a time of 14:46.23, Vega broke the school record in the 5000-meter run and qualified for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships. His time broke a record that had stood for 26 years as he broke the record by eight seconds. He would finish fifth in the race overall and be the top NJCAA runner.
Day one also saw
Deven Bolton punch his ticket to Nationals in the high jump as he won the open portion of the high jump at the Ichabod Invite that featured 20 jumpers. He finished with a leap of 2.03 meters (6'08") and joins his teammate,
Brenden Carter to head to nationals in the high jump. Carter competed in the invite portion of the high jump and placed sixth out of some top-flight competition from four-year schools posting a mark of 2.04 meters (6'08.25").
While
Suheyyb Mohammed broke the school record in the 600-yard run posting a time of 1:14.47 and finish 12th in the event.
On day two the third national qualifying performance of the weekend came for the Conqs as
Sarai Chavez raced to a time of 2:21.77 in the 800-meter run to earn a trip to the NJCAA Indoor National Championships. She finished 15th overall in the race but had the fourth-fastest time of NJCAA competitors.
Also, on the second day of competition,
Kasey Kopetic who has already qualified for Nationals in the 60-meter hurdles would post the best time of his career and break his school record for the second time this year. Kopetic ran a time of 8.12 in the prelims and qualified for finals where he would post a time of 8.06 establishing a new school record and taking sixth place.
Several other Conqs put together strong performances including
Albert House who was just .23 seconds off qualifying for nationals in the 200-meter dash. He also placed tenth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.53.
Bianca Gleim notched a time of 57.77 in the 400-meter dash finishing eighth out of nearly 40 runners in the event. Her time is just .30 seconds off national qualifying.
The women's distance medley relay team had a solid performance finishing with a time of 12:59.56 just two seconds off national qualifying.
The indoor season rolls along for the Conqs with Region 6 Indoor Championships which will take place at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas on February 22nd-23rd.
