Box Score 4 Dodge City softball traveled down to Waco, Texas to compete in the McLennan Festival and took some top-flight competition in five games over three days of action.
The Conquistadors dropped a pair of contests on day one of the McLennan Festival falling 9-1 to Indian Hills and 11-0 to #12 Grayson. On day two the Conqs faced off with #12 Grayson again and Southeastern falling 15-2 and 6-1, while wrapping the trip against the host #2 McLennan falling 12-3.
The Conqs are scheduled for their first home games of the season on Friday, February 14th with a doubleheader against Otero starting at 3:00 pm.
Lost 9-1 vs Indian Hills (5 innings)
The Conqs opened the McLennan Festival in a tough way as Indian Hills jumped up early scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. In the top of the third the Conqs would get on the board as
Dezarae Schmidt started the inning with a single and
Elly Tancayo followed with a double, before
Whitley Cash brought in Schmidt on an RBI groundout to make it 7-1. It remained a six-run game until the bottom of the fifth when Indian Hills tallied two more runs to finish the game via run rule at 9-1.
In the contest, Tancayo was 1-3 with a double, while Schmidt was 1-2 with a run scored and
Anistyn Marcotte added a 1-2 showing.
Shyann Clark tossed 3.2 innings in relief giving up just two runs.
Lost 11-0 vs #12 Grayson (5 innings)
Game two of the tournament in Waco saw the Conqs doomed by early offense from the opponent again as #12 Grayson tagged the Conqs for eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Conqs would struggle to find offense over the course of the action, while they would hold Grayson off the scoreboard in the second and third innings the fourth inning saw three more runs from Grayson to ultimately end the game in five innings at 11-0.
Ally Hamblin and Cash tallied the Conqs' lone two hits in the game while
Riley Moore drew a walk in the matchup. Marcotte tossed 3.1 innings in the circle to record four strikeouts.
Lost 15-2 vs #12 Grayson (5 innings)
The fortunes of the Conqs on day two of the tournament unfortunately didn't change as they faced off with #12 Grayson for the second time in the tournament and it was early offense that propelled Grayson past the Conqs again. Grayson plated four in the top of the first and then would score six in the second, three in the third, and two in the fourth. The Conqs in the bottom of the third broke through with a pair of runs as
Rylie Miller and Moore had back-to-back singles to open the inning.
Karen Galaviz would bring both Miller and Moore in on a two-RBI single. The third inning proved to be most of the Conqs' offense as they fell 15-2.
Moore finished the game 1-2 with a run scored, while Miller was 1-1 with a run scored and Galaviz was 1-2 with two RBI.
Shyann Clark and
Jordyn Boxberger each saw action inside the circle for the Conqs in the loss.
Lost 6-1 vs Southeastern
The Conqs would snag their first lead of the tournament in game four as they took on Southeastern and plated a run in the bottom of the second as
Josie Oakley reached on an error in the inning and would come around to score. It remained 1-0 until the sixth inning with Southeastern found their offense scoring three runs and then adding three more in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, the Conqs looked to make a pushback into the game working the bases loaded on three walks but were unable to score falling 6-1.
Cash and Miller each had a multi-hit game in the loss as Cash was 2-3 with a walk and a triple, while Miller was 2-4.
Campbell Anderson added a 1-2 game with a walk and Oakley was 1-3 with a run scored and walk.
Karen Galaviz had a hit and a stolen base in the contest. Marcotte tossed 6.1 innings in the matchup recording five strikeouts.
Lost 12-3 vs #2 McLennan (5 innings)
In the tournament finale for the Conqs, it was a showdown against the #2 McLennan squad and the Conqs snared the lead early scoring the first runs of the game with three in the top of the first. After a pair of walks early in the inning the Conqs saw Marcotte belt a three-run home run to make it 3-0. McLennan answered in the bottom of the first with four runs while adding one run in the second and third innings, along with four more in the fourth and one in the fifth. The Conqs would fall 12-3 to McLennan to wrap up the McLennan Festival.
Marcotte led the Conqs at the plate going 1-2 with a home run, run scored, and three RBI, while Anderson was 1-2. Clark and
Frankie Martens each saw action in the circle for the Conqs.
