Box Score 2 Dodge City baseball opened their KJCCC series against Butler in a strong way claiming two victories at home beating the Grizzlies 6-2 and 12-9.
The Conquistadors with the wins move to 32-18 on the season and 16-10 in KJCCC action. The 32 wins mark the most under Head Coach, Brett Doe and the most wins in a season since 2017.
The Conqs will look to win the series against Butler on Sunday, April 28th as the series will transition to El Dorado for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
Game 1 – Won 6-2 vs Butler
The Conqs would grab the lead early in the series opener against Butler stringing three hits together in the bottom of the second with a two RBI double by Nick Gray to give the Conqs a 2-0 lead. That lead would grow in the third as the Conqs plated two more runs off a two-run home run by Carter Olson. Butler would cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth and fifth innings each. In the bottom of the six, the Conqs would tally two more runs on a two-RBI single by Andrew Detlefsen. Butler would work the bases loaded in the top of the seventh but the Conqs would shut them down to secure the 6-2.
The Conqs' pitching and defense would stymie Butler just enough to see the Grizzlies strand 14 runners in the game. Garret Carter earned the win tossing 5.2 innings giving up two runs on seven hits, three walks, and three hit batters while striking out five. Josh Nolte tossed a scoreless inning of work and Nathan Harmon recorded the final out to earn the save.
At the plate Olson paced the Conqs going 2-2 with a walk, two runs scored, a home run, and two RBI. Gray was 1-2 with a double, two RBI, and a hit by pitch. Cooper Schneider was 1-2 with two runs scored and a walk.
Game 2 – Won 12-9 vs Butler
The second game of the day would see the lead changed hands multiple times with Butler grabbing the lead first behind three runs in the top of the first to open the game. The Conqs would get a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from Jordan Rodriguez and then grabbed the lead in the third behind three runs off a two-run home run by Schneider and then a solo home run by Olson to make it 4-3. The lead was short-lived for the Conqs as Butler would tally four runs in the top of the fourth including a three-run home run. After getting a run in the fourth the Conqs regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Detlefsen blasted a three-run home run to make it 8-7. The lead would grow for the Conqs with a run in the sixth and seventh innings and then two in the eighth including a solo home run by Max Towchik. Lead 12-7 entering the ninth the Conqs would see Butler scratch across a pair of runs but the Conqs would cap the game claiming victory 12-9.
On the mound Luis Santiago in relief earned the win tossing 3.2 scoreless innings giving up just one hit and one hit batter, while striking out four. Nick Gray tossed the final two innings earning the save.
Conqs offense produced 12 hits led by a 3-4 game from Nick Mesquita who had a run scored, a stolen base, a double, and two RBI. Rodriguez was 1-3 with an RBI, a double, a walk, and two runs scored. Schneider added a 2-4 game with two runs scored, a home run, two RBI, a walk, and a double. Juan Rivera was 2-5 with a run scored and a stolen base.
