Softball Splits Pair of One Run Games at Seward County

Dodge City softball went on the road to continue KJCCC action and would battle with Seward County in a pair of one-run contests getting the split on the day after taking game one 8-7 in eight innings and falling 7-6 in game two. 

The split moves the Conquistadors to 10-28 on the season and 10-18 in KJCCC action, while also splitting the season series with Seward County. 

Four games remain in the regular season as the Conqs will host rival Garden City on Saturday, April 27th starting at 1:00 pm in the final home game of the season and it will be Sophomore Day. The regular season will wrap up for the Conqs on Monday, April 29th when they travel to Colby for a doubleheader. 

Game 1 – Won 8-7 at Seward County (8 innings)
The Conqs would find themselves down early as Seward County tallied a run in the bottom of the first but it would remain 1-0 until an offensive outburst by the Conqs in the top of the fourth. Behind six hits the Conqs would score five runs in the inning to snag the lead and then tack on one more run in the top of the fifth to lead 6-1. Seward County would not go away quietly as they found more offense in the bottom of the fifth to score two and then added three more in the sixth to even the game up at 6-6. In the top of the seventh the Conqs would threaten to regain the lead but came up empty and then Seward County led the bottom of the seventh off with a bunt single followed by another single. With two on and no outs, the Conqs would catch get a ground ball out, and then catch the runner at home before capping the inning with another ground ball out to preserve the tie and send the game to extra innings. A leadoff single by Ally Hamblin to open the eighth would lead the charge for the Conqs as Reneau Ratzlaff would bring in the pinch runner, Hannah Garcia, and the Conqs grabbed the lead back at 7-6. In the bottom of the eighth Seward County got a one-out single but the Conqs would turn a double play to end the game and grab the win. 

Hamblin led the Conqs 12-hit attack going 3-4, while Emily Yelton was 2-4 with an RBI. Josie Oakley added a 1-2 game with two runs scored, a double, walk, stolen base, and hit by pitch. Abigail Taylor was 2-4 with an RBI and double. 

Camryn Lenz picked up the win in the circle in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief giving up just five hits and two walks. Toni Gabaldon tossed a solid 5.1 innings of work as the starter. 

Game 2 – Lost 7-6 at Seward County
Riding some momentum after the game one win the Conqs would get on the board first in game two plating a run in the top of the second on an RBI single by Hamblin. Seward County countered in the fourth by scoring two runs to take the lead and then added one in the fifth and two more in the sixth while the Conqs managed just one run in the sixth and trailed 5-2 entering the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, the Conqs worked the bases loaded behind a single and two Seward County errors and then would bring in three runs highlighted by an RBI single from Rylie Miller and an RBI double by Yelton. The three-run top of the seventh tied the game up at 5-5. Seward County answered in the bottom of the seventh with a single and a runner reaching on an error to open the frame and would work in the game-winning run to snag the 6-5 victory for themselves. 

In the loss, Miller led the Conqs offense with a 2-3 game with a run scored, an RBI, and a walk, while Yelton was 2-3 with an RBI, double, and walk. Five other Conqs recorded a hit in the contest. 

Josie Oakley tossed six innings of action, while Gabaldon tossed the seventh inning in the loss.
