March 24, 2024

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Dodge City softball played to a split against rival Garden City on the road as KJCCC play continued as the Conquistadors fell 10-2 in game one but bounced back with a 17-7 win in game two.

The split moves the Conqs to 5-21 on the season and 5-11 in KJCCC action while the Conqs have won eight of the 11 meetings with the Broncbusters.

The Conqs head on the road for their next two KJCCC doubleheaders starting with a trip to Great Bend where they will take on Barton on Wednesday, March 27th, and then a trip to Goodland to take on Northwest Kansas Tech on Wednesday, April 3rd.

Game 1 – Lost 10-2 at Garden City (6 innings)
The Conqs would fall behind early in the first game of the day as Garden City tallied a pair of runs in the second and then added four in the third using the home run ball to lead the charge. A pair of one-out singles by Reneau Ratzlaff and Camryn Lenz got the Conqs base runners in the top of the fifth and then Josie Oakley delivered the third-straight Conq hit to bring in both Ratzlaff and Lenz making it 6-2. Conqs would however see Garden City get a run back in the bottom of the fifth and then three more in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of home runs to cap the game in the sixth inning at 10-2.

Lenz and Madison Kacer each had a multi-hit game, while three other Conqs recorded a hit in the loss. It was a 2-3 game for Lenz with a run scored, stolen base, and double, while Kacer was 2-3 with a double. Oakley, Toni Gabaldon, and Ratzlaff each tallied a hit also.

Game 2 – Won 17-7 at Garden City
Unlike game one the Conqs got on the board early and then solidified the game in their favor with late offense. In the first inning, Lenz would notch her second double of the day and then would come into score on a Garden City error to give the Conqs their first lead of the day at 1-0. That lead grew in the top of the second as the Conqs worked the bases loaded on two walks and a hit batter and then Ratzlaff brought in two runs on a single, while Lenz brought in a run on a groundout and another scored on an error to make it 5-0. Garden City would get on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second and then tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the third behind three runs. Another run in the bottom of the fourth gave the lead to the Broncbusters at 6-5 after four innings and they would tack on another in the fifth to lead 7-5. The Conqs would do the rest of the scoring as it started with a RBI single by Hannah Garcia in the top of the sixth then an RBI single by Ratzlaff to tie the game at 7-7. A passed ball would score another run for the Conqs and then Oakley delivered a two-RBI double followed by an RBI single by Gabaldon and Ally Hamblin each to make it 12-7. Conqs wouldn't be down scoring adding five more for good measure in the top of the seventh as Garcia pushed a double into center to bring in a run and Oakley, Gabaldon, and Hamblin each recorded RBI singles in the frame leading to the Conqs gaining the 17-7 victory.

The Conqs had their seventh 10+ hit game of the season and third in the last four games with eight players recording at least one hit in the game. Six Conqs had a multi-hit game in the win with Hamblin leading the charge as she was 4-5 with three RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. Garcia finished 2-3 with three runs scored, two RBI, a double, and a walk, while Sayge Salmans was 2-3 with three runs scored, hit by a pitch, and a double. Gabaldon added a 2-4 game with a run scored, hit by a pitch, and two RBI, along with Oakley going 2-5 with two runs scored, three RBI, and a double. Ratzlaff posted a 2-5 game with two runs scored and three RBI.
