Softball Rallies In Game One and Ultimately Splits With Seward County

Dodge City softball continued KJCCC action as they played host to Seward County and would rally for a game one win 10-9 and then split the day falling 12-4 in game two. 

The Conquistadors with the doubleheader split move to 4-20 on the season and 4-10 in KJCCC action. 

The Conqs will keep the season going on Saturday, March 23rd with a road doubleheader against Garden City slated for a 1:00 pm start time. 

Game 1 – Won 10-9 vs Seward County 
The Conqs would fall behind early as the Saints of Seward County would get some offense going early tallying a run in the first and another in the second and then three more in the third to lead 5-0. That lead would increase by two with a pair of solo home runs for the Saints in the top of the fourth making it 7-0. The Conqs broke through in the bottom of the fourth as Abigail Zabel opened the Conqs scoring with a solo home run. Abigail Taylor and Hannah Garcia added an RBI single and RBI double, respectively in the fourth as the Conqs drew within 7-3. 

After a scoreless top of the fifth by Seward County, the Conqs continued their scoring in the bottom of the inning plating five runs as the first six batters of the inning reach base safely. Josie Oakley delivered a two-RBI double, then Toni Gabaldon notched an RBI single, then Zabel followed with an RBI triple, and Ally Hamblin notched an RBI single as the Conqs grabbed the 8-7 lead. The sixth inning would see Seward County snatch the lead back by scoring a pair of runs to lead 9-8 but the Conqs answered quickly with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. The go-ahead run would come when Oakley would come into score on a wild pitch and the Conqs took the 10-9 lead. With two outs in the top of the seventh Seward County would get a triple and then a walk but the Conqs capped the game as Reneau Ratzlaff grabbed the final out in center field to secure the 10-9 win for the Conqs. 

Zabel led an 11-hit attack for the Conqs as she was 2-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, a home run, and a triple. Oakley finished the game 2-4 with two RBI, two runs scored, and a double, while Madison Kacer and Camryn Lenz each had a double, run scored, and walk. 

Oakley earned the win in the circle tossing the final two innings, while Gabaldon had a solid showing in five innings. 

Game 2 – Lost 12-4 vs Seward County (6 innings)
The second game of the day opened similar to the first as Seward County tallied the first run of the game doing so behind four hits in the first inning. However, the Conqs looked like they brought some momentum with them into the second game scoring four in the bottom of the first to grab a 4-1 lead. An RBI double by Oakley brought in Lenz to start the Conqs scoring in the first while Hamblin and Taylor each had an RBI single in the frame and Sayge Salmans added an RBI double. Seward County would do the rest of the scoring as they grabbed the lead with five runs in the third and then added one in the fourth and fifth innings each before capping their scoring with four in the sixth. Conqs needing to score to remain alive in the contest in the bottom of the sixth would get a one-out single by Taylor but would be unable to score falling 12-4 in six innings. 

Ratzlaff posted a 2-4 performance while Hamblin was 2-3 with a double, RBI, and run scored and Taylor had a two-hit game.
