Baseball Takes Two Over Luna In First Home Games

The strong start to the season continued Friday for the Dodge City baseball as they picked up a doubleheader sweep of Luna winning 12-3 and 8-5 in a pair of seven-inning games. 

The Conquistadors with the two victories improved to 9-3 on the season and will continue action over the weekend as they will play Northeast and Highland at 11:00 am and 4:00 pm on Sunday, February 25th. 

Game 1 – won 12-3 vs Luna 
The Conqs jumped up early in game one of the doubleheader with Luna sending eight to the plate in the bottom of the first inning getting RBI doubles by Brian Hallum and Nathan Harmon to lead 2-0. Bryce Chambers and the Conqs defense would sit Luna down in order over the first three innings and three more runs were scored in the third for the Conqs to lead 5-0 after three innings. In the top of the fourth Luna broke through and plated a pair of runs but the Conqs responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI single by Harmon. After Luna tallied another run in the fifth the Conqs would plate five in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer by Hallum and a solo home run by Harmon highlighting the inning and the Conqs added one more in the sixth to secure the 12-3 win. 

Chambers earned the win on the mound tossing five innings giving up three runs on three hits, one walk, and one hit batter while striking out six. Connor Olson was stout in the final two innings giving up only a walk and striking out five. 

Hallum and Harmon led the Conqs offense who had 12 hits in the win. Hallum was 2-3 with three runs scored, a home run, a double, three RBI, and a walk, while Harmon was 3-3 with a home run, a double, three RBI, two runs scored, a walk, and two stolen bases. Nick Mesquita was 2-3 with two runs scored, a triple, hit by pitch, and two stolen bases. Alex Galyean added a 2-4 showing with a double and two runs scored.  

Game 2 – won 8-5 vs Luna
The Conqs would bring out the brooms for the doubleheader sweep but it was a tight contest against Luna. Luna snagged the lead early with two runs in the top of the second inning but the Conqs had a quick answer to grab the lead in the bottom of the second. Max Towchik tattooed a two-run homer to tie the game in the bottom of the second and then an RBI double by Juan Rivera gave the Conqs the 3-2 lead. Luna tied the game up in the top of the fourth with a run but again the Conqs answered plating two in the bottom of the fourth. Conqs added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth and would hold off a late push by Luna as they scored two in the top of the seventh but would stop there giving the Conqs the 8-5 victory. 

Harmon had a two-hit contest, while Towchik was 2-4 with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Mesquita added a 2-2 game with two runs scored and an RBI. 

Trenton Chenard tossed a solid three and third innings as the starter recording four strikeouts, while Chayston Keck earned the win tossing two and two-thirds scoreless innings giving up just three hits and a hit batter, while striking out three. Torin Cavanaugh tossed the final inning.
