Box Score 4 Dodge City baseball team hit the road for their second road trip to Texas of the season and faced off with the #20 ranked JUCO Perfect Game Preseason Top 25 team, Midland in a four-game series and came away with a series win taking three of four games.
After opening the series on Sunday with a tough 4-2 loss the Conquistadors responded to take the second game of the day 13-10 and then sweep the doubleheader on Monday winning 6-4 and 5-4 over Midland. The Conqs are now 7-4 on the season.
Up next for the Conqs is another road trip to Texas as they will travel to Gainesville, Texas to take on North Central Texas for a four-game series this upcoming weekend.
Game 1 – at Midland (Lost 4-2)
Conqs fell behind in the first inning of game one as Midland tallied the first run of the series and then made it 2-0 with a run in the fourth. In the top of the sixth, the Conqs scratched their first run across home plate as back-to-back singles opened the inning and an RBI groundout by
Trevor Blackwell brought in
Cale Blasi to make it 2-1 Midland. Midland answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-1. Down to the final three outs, the Conqs were able to score one run on a Caden Malton RBI single, but the Conqs were unable to get any more runs falling 4-2.
In the loss,
Shea Walker was solid on the mound tossing six innings giving up four runs on seven hits and no walks, while striking out five. Blasi went 3-4 with a run scored, while Matlon,
Jake Miller,
Weston Symes, and
Kory Schmidt each had a hit.
Game 2 – at Midland (Won 13-10)
The second game of the series saw early and often offense on both sides as it featured 23 total runs. The Conqs opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning getting a two-out two-run homer by Schmidt, but Midland countered in the bottom of the first capitalizing on four walks and three hits to score five runs and lead 5-2 after one inning. Each team tallied a run in the second and the Conqs would get a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to tie the game up at 6-6 as Matlon blasted a two-run home run. Midland answered in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs, but the Conqs didn't waste time answering as Symes belted a two-run homer to make it 8-8 and then the Conqs tallied two more runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead 10-8. Symes added to the Conqs lead with his second home run of the game in the top of the 7th and added two more runs in the 8th to secure the 13-10 win.
Symes and Miller paced the Conqs 11-hit performance. It was a 2-4 performance by Symes with two runs scored, three RBI, two home runs, and a walk, while Miller was 3-5 with three runs scored. Malton tallied two hits and four RBI with a double and home run, while Schmidt was 2-3 with three runs scored, a home run, three RBI, and two walks.
Diego Dominguez finished the game pitching to earn the win tossing 4.1 innings giving up just two runs on one hit and three walks while striking out seven.
Zack Robinson also tossed four innings of relief.
Game 3 – at Midland (Won 6-4)
Day two saw the Conqs take early control in the third game of the series behind a five-run second inning. Symes started the scoring for the Conqs as he hit his third home run of the season and series, while Schmidt tattooed a two-RBI triple to make it 5-0. Midland cut into the Conqs lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Conqs got their sixth run in the top of the fifth. Midland made a late push in the bottom of the seventh scoring two runs, but the Conqs would shut the door and secure the 6-4 win.
Symes,
Carson Wright, and Schmidt led the Conqs offense each recording a two-hit game. A 2-4 performance with three RBI, a run scored, and a home run was the final line for Symes at the plate, while Wright was 2-2 with two runs scored and two walks. Schmidt went 2-3 with a triple, two RBI, and a walk.
Blake Anderson earned the win tossing five innings as the starter giving up two runs on seven hits, a walk, and a hit batter while striking seven.
Justin Dunlap finished the contest tossing the final two innings of action.
Game 4 – at Midland (Won 5-4)
The Conqs capped the series with a tight battle with Midland that would see both teams hold leads in. Midland tallied a run in the bottom of the first inning to take the initial lead but a solo home run by Blackwell tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second. The lead flipped back to Midland in the bottom of the third as they scored their second run of the game to make it 2-1. The Conqs found the offense again in the top of the sixth as
Zandt Payne led the inning off with a double and would score a run to tie the game on an error. The scoring continued in the sixth for the Conqs when Blackwell blasted his second home run of the game this time a three-run shot to make it 5-2. Midland would get a run in the seventh and eighth innings, but the Conqs got out of the eighth with Midland leaving the bases loaded, and went on to secure the 5-4 win.
Blackwell was 2-4 with two home runs, four RBI, two runs scored, while Blasi went 2-2 with a run scored and walk. Payne added a 2-5 performance with a run scored and double in the win.
On the mound,
Tristan Wolf was strong in six innings of work as the starter giving up just two runs on seven hits and one walk, while striking out eight, while
Justus Revill finished the game tossing two and one-third innings.
