Conquistador Women's Basketball Falls in Tight Contest

Box Score (Garden City, Kansas) – Poor shooting doomed Dodge City Community College in the Women's Basketball team's loss to Garden City Community College on Saturday night. In the first quarter they shot just over 46% but as the game went on it got progressively worse to lead to a 56-50 loss in Garden City.

The first quarter started out slowly as it was just 2-2 with just over 3 minutes gone. At the 6:51 mark Alyssa Boyce of Garden City hit a 3 to jump-start a 5-0 run early on. Ashia Pool and Makaela Ewing would hit shots of their own to answer with a 5-0 run for Dodge. It was now squared away at 7-7 with 4:18 to go in the first. It would go back in forth in the final two minutes with each team scoring. Going into the 2nd it was Garden City with the 14-13 lead.

The 2nd would go back and forth for the first several minutes. An Asia Pool layup at 4:04 would kick start an 8-0 Conquistador run lead by Ashley Nelson scoring 4 of the 8. This would allow for Dodge City to momentarily take command of the game and head into halftime with a 29-25 lead.

In the first half, the Conqs shot 43% but that was buoyed by the first quarter where they shot 46%, in the second quarter they shot just 6-16. They shot just 1-10 from the 3-point line in the first half and 4-6 from the free throw line.

Starting out the 2nd half, it would be Garden City with all of the momentum Talia Roberts would begin to catch fire. The Broncbusters would go on an 8-0 run with Roberts scoring all 8 by herself. The Conquistadors would tie it up again at 35 before Garden City went on a 5-0 run. In the third, it would be the Talia Roberts show as she scored 14 points to allow Garden City to outscore the Conqs 20-11 and go into the fourth quarter with a 45-40 lead.

The fourth quarter would be a low scoring quarter for both teams which wound up being the benefit of the team in front. The Conqs did, however, retake the lead. They were able to step it up defensively and not allow Garden City to score for 6 minutes and 40 seconds. Unfortunately, Dodge City did not do a great job taking advantage as they were only able to score 7 points in the same time period. They took the lead at 49-47 before Garden City got the offense going by scoring 7 unanswered in 1 minute late in the quarter. This would be the deciding stretch of the contest as they were able to lock down the Conqs defensively and pull out a 56-50 victory.

The Conquistadors really struggled offensively in the second half as they shot just 7-23, just barely above 30% and just 22% in the final quarter. They also turned it over 18 times in the game but were able to win the rebounding battle in a slight margin 31-30.

Ashia Pool scored 12 points in the game on 5-11 shooting. Makaela Ewing had 11 points and 7 rebounds.

The Conqs play their home finale for the season when they welcome Pratt Community College to the Dome on Wednesday night.
