Women's Basketball Moves Into Second Round at Nationals With Win Over Northwest Mississippi

Back at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament for the fourth straight year, the Dodge City women's basketball team made it three straight years to play in the second round after beating Northwest Mississippi 63-50 in the first round on Wednesday.

The win moves the Conquistadors to 27-5 on the season and into the second round, where they will play the #7 seed College of Southern Idaho on Friday, March 27th at 12:15 pm in Lake Charles, Louisiana on ESPN+.

After Northwest Mississippi scored the initial bucket of the ball game, the Conqs scored the next six points on a pair of three-pointers from Saje Evans and Jade Célérier. The lead grew to eight for the Conqs with 4:27 remaining in the first quarter, leading 14-6, and with under two minutes left in the first quarter, the Conqs lead grew to double digits at 20-10. Leading 22-13 entering the second stanza, the Conqs took control firmly by outscoring Northwest Mississippi 18-9 to lead 40-22 at intermission. The Conqs used that strong second off to continue to hold off the advances of Northwest Mississippi in the second half, securing the 63-50 win.

While the Conqs shot just 35.8% and hit just five three-pointers, the Conqs controlled the boards with 51 rebounds. The 51 rebounds are the second most this season for the Conqs in a game and were 20 more than Northwest Mississippi. Defensively, the Conqs locked down Northwest Mississippi, holding them to just 29.2% shooting.

Savi Mi paced the Conqs with 19 points on 7-14 shooting, adding seven assists and five rebounds on the day, earning her Jersey Mikes Player of the Game by the NJCAA.
