Conq Women Break out of Shooting Slump for Victory

Addison Rowley scored 20 points to lead the Conqs against Garden City.
Box Score Ever since the Christmas break the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team has been in a shooting slump when it comes to game day. The first half it appeared that that trend would continue on Saturday against Garden City, but the second half was a different story for the Conqs as they rode a strong shooting performance to a 62-55 win over the Broncbusters.

The first five minutes of the game was slow going as neither team could seem to find the basket early. Just under six minutes into the game Makaela Ewing hit a jumper to put the Conqs up 6-4. However over the next four minutes Garden City would score 10 of the next 12 points to take a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Just six seconds into the second quarter the Broncbusters would hit a three pointer to extend their lead to 17-8 and it would stay that way for almost two minutes as the Conqs continued to struggle to find the basket. WIth 4:11 remaining in the half, Garden would stretch their lead out to 26-16 which would prove to be their biggest lead of the game. Dodge City would score the final five points of the half to close to a five point deficit at the break.

The first basket of the second half proved to be a good sign for the Conqs. Addison Rowley cashed in a three pointer just 18 seconds into the half to close the margin to two, then Haleigh Hill scored two minutes later to tie the game at 26. Garden regained the lead after breaking a seven minute scoreless streak and stretched out to a four point lead before Rowley again tightened the game up with another three pointer. Garden city would maintain a small lead until just over two minutes left in the third quarter when Ashley Nelson got fouled and finished the shot for an and one to give Dodge a three point lead. The quarter would end with the Conqs clinging to a one point lead. In the first four minutes of the fourth quarter it looked like the frustrations would continue for Dodge City as the Broncbusters took a six point lead with 6:13 remaining in the game, but Rowley once again would not let that stand. She hit her third three pointer of the half to close the gap to three points. Over the next four minutes the two teams would battle back and forth with the game being tied four times in that stretch. The Conqs would take the lead for good on a lay-up by Allie Baker. The Alec Fitts would make what proved to be one of the biggest plays of the game. She drove baseline and split two Garden defenders on the way to the basket. They fouled Fitts, which would end her night due to a bruised knee, but Rowley replaced her and hit the two free throws to put the Conqs up 57-53. From their Dodge City had to hit free throws to ice the game and the seven point victory.

Rowley had a huge night for Dodge City as she scored 20 points for the Conqs. Nelson, Baker, and Kaylee Dale checked in next with 9, 8, and 7 points respectively. Kaylyn Maple turned in a big defensive performance for Dodge City as she grabbed eight rebounds and had three blocks on the night.

The win pushes Dodge City into a tie with Garden for fifth place in the conference standings at 5-7 and makes them 10-11 overall. They will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Pratt Community College.
