Box Score The Dodge City Community College men's basketball team was in their third game out of their last four facing an opponent that is either ranked or receiving votes in the latest NJCAA poll on Saturday night. This time they were traveling to #18 Seward County Community College and put forth a very solid effort before falling to the Saints by a score of 89 to 79 in Liberal on Saturday night.
The Saints started the game on fire from deep. They used an offensive attack led by Devin Bethely early in the game to take a 21-9 lead just six minutes into the game. It was at that point that the Conqs started to claw their way back into the game. They used a consistent attack based largely on the inside play of
Jyrus Freels and
Kevin Howard to manage to cut the Saint lead. With just over a minute left in the first half, Dodge City cut the lead to just two points and would ultimately go to the half trailing by a 48 to 45 count.Â
The Saints once again came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders as they started the second half on a scoring tear. They used a balance of the inside scoring of Mohamed Selmi and back to back deep shots from Reggie Miller to quickly extend their lead over the Conqs. At the second half media timeout Dodge City found themselves in a 78 to 56 hole that they once again had to find a way to dig out of. They fell behind 83-60, but finished the game on a 19-6 run to pull the game to 10 points at the buzzer.
Freels led four Conqs in double figures as he tallied 17 points.
Mason Senigaur scored 16, while Howard and
UniQue Mency each put up 14 points of their own. Howard also had a huge night on the board as he pulled down 15 rebounds and Freels also managed another double-double with 10 rebounds.
Deon'ta Tinker came off the bench to dish out a team high six assists for the Conqs.
Dodge City will face another ranked opponent on Wednesday as they host #9 Hutchinson Community College at the Student Activity Center at 7:30pm.
