Box Score The Dodge City Community College women's basketball team has been struggling with their shooting ever since they have been back from their lay-off between semesters. They were hoping a trip to Coffeyville would change that trend, but instead ran into more of the same as they fell to the Red Ravens by a score of 55-49 on Saturday.
The Conqs had prepared for multiple zone defenses from Coffeyville and got exactly what they were expecting when they hit the court at Nellis Gymnasium. They moved the ball well and got looks at the basket, but once again could not capitalize on the opportunities that they had as they struggled to only put up 10 points in the first quarter of the game. Luckily they put together a solid effort on the boards and on the defensive end as they found themselves only trailing 15-10 after the first ten minutes. The second quarter was not much better for Dodge City offensively as they only put up 12 points, but they did manage to hold Coffeyville to 13 points. That allowed them to stay within striking distance as they only trailed by a score of 28-22 at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Conqs come to life behind a renewed energy on the defensive end. They used that energy to translate into offensive efficiency for their biggest quarter of the night as they scored 19 points in the third. That gave the Conqs a slight advantage at 41-39 going into the final quarter. Unfortunately the Conqs could not maintain that momentum in the final ten minutes. They only managed eight points in the fourth period and late free throws by the Ravens allowed them to pull away for the six point win.
On the night the Conqs only shot 24.1% from the field and they were only 4-30 behind the three point arc.
Ashia Pool and
Haleigh Hill both came off the bench to lead Dodge City. Pool was the only Conq in double figures with 10 points, and Hill tallied nine points and 13 rebounds on the night.
The Conqs will have little time to think about the loss as they will have a short turnaround and be back in action on Monday at the Student Activity Center when they host Colby Community College at 5:30pm. That game will mark the beginning on play within the Western Division of the Jayhawk Conference.Â
