Box Score Coach
Steve Tucker knew his team faced a big challenge as they headed on the road to #9 ranked Coffeyville Community College on Saturday night. He knew they would need a quick start and some great shooting all the way through the game to pull the upset. They got one of the two as they jumped out to a great start, but they could not hold onto the early lead they built as they fell to an extremely hot shooting Red Raven team by a score of 108-80.
Dodge City got off to exactly the start they wanted in the first 11 minutes of the game. Knowing that the Ravens would key on KJCCC leading scorer
Jyrus Freels the Conqs were ready to counter that with an outside attack.
UniQue Mency started the barrage as he hit two early three pointers to get the Conqs off to a good start. When the first wave of substitutes came in for the Conqs things got even better.
Mike Burns caught fire from the corner as he hit three shots beyond the arc in the first 10 minutes of the game. All of that effort led to a 28 to 21 lead for Dodge City at the first media timeout. The Conqs got the first bucket out of the timeout to take a 30-21 lead and it appeared that the momentum would continue. Things went in a very different direction in the next eight minutes. The Ravens adjusted their defense to start taking away some of the looks that the Conqs were getting and they turned up their own offensive output over the final nine minutes of the first half. Coffeyville outscored the Conqs 24-10 the rest of the half to take a 45-40 lead into the locker room.
Dodge City was not rattled as they have been a second half team a majority of the year, however things did not get much better for the Conqs after the break. They were able to rediscover some of the offensive rhythm they had in the first half, but the Ravens found a different gear offensively and the Conqs were not able to figure out a way to shut that down. Coffeyville scored 33 points in the first ten minutes of the second half to take a 78-63 lead at the media timeout of the second half. The final ten minutes did not get much better for the Conqs as they were outscored 30-17 in that stretch to give up the final score. Coffeyville shot an amazing 57% from the field on the night which enabled them to put up the 108 points.
Mency led four Conqs in double figures with 20 points on the night. Burns,
Mason Senigaur, and Freels had 12, 11, and 10 respectively as Freels pulled down six rebounds to lead Dodge City.
Justice Dixon had another big night distributing the ball as he dished out eight assists.
The loss leaves the Conqs with a 6-10 record overall and 1-6 in conference play as they finish out their crossover games against the Eastern Division. They will start Jayhawk West play on Monday when they host Colby Community College at 7:30 at the Student Activity Center.
