The Conqs fell behind early in game one and were never able to get the offense going. The Comets were able to put up five runs in the first inning on six hits to take an early 5-0 lead.Â
Brooklyn Botts was able to get the Conqs on the board in the top of the third with a solo home run to centerfield to cut the lead to 5-1. The Comets fired right back in the bottom half with two home runs, a double and a single to extend their lead to 12-1.
Evone Garcia was able to get the second Dodge City run across in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 12-2, but that is all the Conqs would get. Cottey College tacked on six more runs in the bottom of the fourth push the lead to 18-2. Dodge City could not get any runs across in the fifth and lost game one, 18-2.
Jordyn McDaniel and
Brittany Kendall both pitched in game two, with McDaniel throwing 3.1 innings and allowing 10 runs on 12 hits. Kendall then threw the final 2.2 innings and allowed five runs on six hits.
After Samanth Montano reached on a hit by pitch, McDaniel helped herself out with a triple to score the first run of the game and give Dodge City their first lead of the day, 1-0.
In the second inning, the Conqs added to their lead on a double from Botts to score
Caley Best and extend the Dodge City lead to 2-0. The Comets then got on the board in the bottom of the first with a solo home run and woke up their offense.
The Conqs still continued to score, adding another run in the top of the third on a
Jade Brallier single to give Dodge City a 3-1 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the third, the Comets collected four straight hits and were able to tie the game at three heading into the fourth inning.
Dodge City seemed to have possibly gained all the momentum in the top of the fourth with a three-run home run from Montano, but Cottey College responded with seven runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 10-6 lead.
The Conquistadors were able to cut the lead to 10-8 in the very next inning, but the Comets pulled away again, scoring four more in the bottom of the fifth to make it 14-8.
After the Comets added one more in the bottom of the sixth, the Conqs were able to get one run on a wild pitch, but could not mount a comeback as they lost game two, 15-9.
The Conqs are now 9-15 on the year. They will be in action again tomorrow for a doubleheader against Fort Scott Community College at 1 and 3 p.m.
