McGroarty Sets Career-High, Conqs Defeat Garden City

Box Score GARDEN CITY, Kan. – Behind a career-high performance from Dayton McGroarty, the Conqusitadors went Garden City Community College on Saturday afternoon and took down the Broncbusters, 87-70.
 
Dayton McGroarty led all scorers with a career-high 24 points and also fell just one rebound short of a double-double with nine. Both Kevin Howard and Jyrus Freels battled in the post, scoring in double figures with 11 and 12 respectively.
 
Kevin Howard came out on fire to start the game, knocking down back-to-back three's to give Dodge City an early 8-5 lead, but the Broncbusters quickly took a 9-8 lead.
 
McGroarty then entered the game and caught fire, quickly scoring 10 points and giving the Conquistadors a 24-18 lead at the media timeout.
 
After the timeout, the Conqs continued to play well, eventually extending their lead to 35-22 after McGroarty's third three of the game and a fast-break layup from Jyrus Freels.
 
Dodge City was able to end the half on a high note, taking a 40-26 lead into the locker room.
 
Coming out of halftime, the Conquistadors continued to keep the pressure on the Broncbusters, holding a 14 points lead with just over 13 minutes to play.
 
The Broncbusters would not go away easily cutting the lead to 62-49 after a technical foul by the Conquistadors. The Conqs then went on a 4-0 run to take a 66-49 lead into the media timeout.
 
After an unconventional three-point play by Howard, Ishawn Murphy was able knock down back-to-back baskets to give the Conqs a 21 point lead with 6:09 left to play in the game.
 
For the final five minutes, the Conquistadors did not let up, extending the lead to 26 with just over three minutes to play. The Broncbusters were able to cut the lead to 15, but that was the closest they would get as the Conqs won, 87-70.
 
The Conqs are now 8-15 overall and move to 6-13 in KJCCC play. They will be in action again on Wednesday as they travel to Butler at 7:30 p.m. The Grizzlies took the first meeting in Dodge City, 84-78.
