Box Score INDEPENDENCE, Kan. – The Dodge City men's basketball dropped a contest with Independence Community College on Thursday evening, 79-63.
Justice Dixon led the Conquistadors with 18 points, while
Tajae Anderson added 10.
The Conquistadors were able to grab a 9-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game, but then in the next 10 minutes, the Conqs were outscored 26-9 to give the Pirates a 28-18 lead with seven minutes left in the first half.
The largest lead the Pirates could get in the first half was 16, but
Tamaje Blackwell quickly knocked down a three to bring it back to 13, 41-28.
A fast break basket by
Lazarus Williams and a free throw by
Justice Dixon cut the lead back to 10 with 44.9 seconds left and the lead would stay the same as the Conqs went into the locker room trailing, 31-41.
For the first 13 minutes of the second half, the Pirates kept their lead around 10, but with just under five minutes left in the game,
Justice Dixon finished a tough layup to cut the lead to six.
After a timeout by Independence, the Pirates went on a 9-2 run to extend the lead back to 74-61 with 1:16 to play. Both teams got one more field goal and the Pirates knocked down three free throws as they won, 79-63.
The Conquistadors move to 8-20 overall and 6-18 in KJCCC play. They will be in action again on Saturday as they travel to Seward County. The Saints won the first matchup of the year in Dodge City, 70-64.
