Box Score The Dodge City Community College men's basketball team finished out their fall schedule with a home conference game against Allen Community College on Monday night at the Student Activity Center. After digging a big hole, the Conqs were able to come back to cut the Red Devil lead to six with less than four minutes remaining but could never get back to even as they fell by a score of 90-76.
In the first half, Allen County came out firing on all cylinders. They were able to hit 8 of 16 shots behind the three point line in the first 20 minutes of the contest. The Conqs on the other hand got off to a slow start as they struggled to get much going on the offensive end. The starting lineup had a different look as the Conqs were searching for a more athletic, explosive lineup to start the game. Unfortunately those starters struggled shooting the ball early and Dodge was forced to try to dig out of a hole.
Kevin Howard and
UniQue Mency came off the bench to provide a spark for the Conqs as they were able to cut a double digit lead down to 40-48 by the time halftime arrived.
In the second half the Red Devils continued to play at a fast pace, but their shooting percentage dipped significantly from the first half as they were only able to hit two from beyond the arc in the last 20 minutes. Despite their shooting woes, Allen was still slowly pulling away from the Conqs and stretched the lead all the way out to 22 points with about 12 minutes remaining in the game. That is when the Conqs started chipping away at the lead. With just under five minutes left in the game the Conqs had trimmed the lead all the way down to six points. Unfortunately some untimely poor shooting at the free throw stripe kept Dodge from pulling even closer to the Devils. Allen County was able to take advantage of the Conqs fouling to try to extend the game and pulled away for a 14 point win.
Mency led the Conqs with 17 points including 3 of 4 shooting behind the three point arc, he also added four assists on the night to tie for a team high with
Justice Dixon. Howard and
Jyrus Freels both posted double double for Dodge City as Howard scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Freels scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The loss drops the Conqs to 6-7 on the year and 1-4 in conference play. They will be back in action on January 5, 2019 in a non-conference match-up with Northern Oklahoma College-Enid at the Student Activity Center.
