Conqs Down Lamar on Second Day of Classic

Ashley Nelson had 11 points and 9 rebounds for the Conqs
Box Score After suffering their worst shooting night of the year on Friday night, the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team rebounded in a very solid way against Lamar Community College. The Conqs used an aggressive offensive attack combined with a strong effort on the boards to down Lamar by a 77 to 42 margin.

The first quarter started slowly for the Conquistadors as they seemed to be suffering a little bit of a hangover from the previous night's performance. Lamar was aggressive out of the gate and stayed right with Dodge through the opening period as the Conq lead was only one at 12-11. The second quarter saw the Conqs find their offensive stride and start to pull away from the Lopes. The Dodge City offense started driving to the basket and finding a way to get to the free throw line which they had not done at all in the first half on Friday night. Haleigh Hill and Ashia Pool both pushed their way into the lane to get to the line four times a piece in the second quarter. That aggressiveness combined with an improved shooting touch for the Conqs led to a fifteen point advantage just in the second quarter that gave Dodge a 39-23 lead at the break.

The Conqs kept with their offensive attack in the third quarter and continued to extend their lead. They also hit the board very hard, so the shots that didn't go in for them were rebounded and put back in as the Conqs grabbed 17 offensive board on the night. Dodge also stepped up on the defensive end in the third period holding Lamar to just nine points as they scored 17 of their own. The game seemed to be out of reach going into the fourth quarter, but Dodge City did not want to leave any doubt as they continued attacking on both ends of the floor. The Conqs used a 21 point final quarter to pull away for the 35 point win.

Makaela Ewing made the most of her first start of the year as she scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds on the night. Ashley Nelson came off the bench to give the Conqs a huge lift as she scored 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds of her own, and Hill also reached double figures as she scored 12 points to lead the Conqs in scoring. Fredrionna Adams dished out seven assists on the night for Dodge City.

The Conqs will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Moberly, MO for a classic at Moberly Area College. The Conqs will get another shot at State Fair Community College who defeated them in the first game of the season.
