Cold Shooting Dooms Conq Women on First Night of Classic

Box Score The Conquistador women's basketball team had a solid defensive effort on the first night of the Conq Classic, but their shooting performance left them in a hole that they could never get out of. In the end a 20% field goal was too much to overcome as Dodge City fell to Redlands Community College by a score of 57-34.

In the first quarter neither team could get going on the offensive end. The Dodge City defense did a great job of holding Redlands in check as they only allowed nine points in the first ten minutes. The problem was the Conq offense was not moving either. They only manage nine points of their own to be tied at the end of the first period. In the second period Dodge City went into an even deeper funk as the Cougars started pulling out of theirs. Dodge City went the first eight minutes of the quarter and only scored two points as Redlands gradually pulled away from the Conqs. A 16 to 4 advantage for Redlands gave them a 25-13 lead at halftime.

The third quarter was the best offensive period for the Conqs as they did manage to score 13 points in the quarter, but they also had issues on the defensive end as Redlands started to hit shots. In the end the Cougars were able to score 21 points in the quarter to extend their lead to 20 by the end of the third period. Dodge City once again found their defense in the fourth quarter, but despite getting good looks at the basket could not get anything going on the offensive end. Redlands once again outscored the Conqs in the fourth quarter by a count of 11-8 to creat the final 23 point margin.

On the night the Conqs were 13-64 from the field, but an even worse 2 for 35 behind the three point arc which doomed their offensive performance. They were outrebounded by a 48-43 count, but did force 20 turnovers on the night. Makaela Ewing led the way for Dodge City with seven points and five rebounds. Freshman Alana Busby-Dunphy had a big night on the boards as she grabbed eight rebounds in only 13 minutes.

"That was an extremely poor offensive performance from our team," said Coach Zach Loll. "We have to find a group that will work well together and be confident enough to knock down shots. Right now we just aren't doing that, but we will figure this out."

The Conqs will be back in action today as they take on Lamar Community College at 4:00pm. The other game today will be the Pratt women against Redlands at noon.
