Box Score IOLA, Kan. – Going 4-for-17 from the free throw line and 0-for-11 from the three point line, the Conquistador women's basketball team fell to Allen County on Wednesday evening by a score of 66-42.
Makaela Ewing led the way offensively with 11 points while Kaylee Dale followed with eight points and six rebounds, with all six rebounds coming on the offensive glass.
Both teams went scoreless for the first 2:30, until Allen County was able to knock down their first basket. Dodge City was still unable to find the bottom of the net until Makaela Ewing knocked down a jumper from the short corner to cut the Red Devil lead to 7-2.
Dodge City was able to find a little bit of a rhythm for the remainder of the quarter, cutting the lead to 13-7, but the Red Devils finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to extend their lead back to 12, 19-7.
The Conqs got off to a quicker start in quarter number two, going on a 6-0 run of their own to quickly cut the lead to 19-13 and force Allen County to call their first timeout of the game.
Coming out of the timeout, Allen County pushed their lead back to 10 points for most of the quarter, but a contested layup by Aguino with five seconds left in the half cut the lead to eight.
Allen County came out strong in the third quarter as they began on an 8-2 run in the first five minutes to push the lead to 14. Allie Baker was able to knife through the lane and finish two layups to cut the lead to 11 with 3:11 left to play in the quarter.
Dodge City was able to fight, cutting the lead to 10, but before the end of the quarter, the Red Devils pushed the lead back to 12, 44-32.
After 3:30 in the fourth quarter, the Conqs were finally able to cut the lead back to single digits as Ewing finished a fast break layup to make the score 45-36.
Allen County then turned up the defense for the remainder of the game, getting their lead back to 17 with 3 minutes left to play. The Red Devils then knocked down five consecutive free throws late in the game to push the Allen County lead to 60-40.
Allen County did not let up in the final two minutes, knocking down back-to-back threes to push the lead to 66-42 before the end of the game.
With a loss to start 2018, the Conqs are now 5-8 overall and 2-8 in KJCCC play. Dodge City will be in action again on Saturday as they host Independence Community College at 1 p.m., inside the Student Activity Center.
