Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - The Dodge City men's basketball team lost another heartbreaker on Wednesday night, falling to Seward County by a score of 70-64.
Justice Dixon led the Conquistadors with 16 points on the day, but
Dayton McGroarty had his best offensive performance this season, dropping 15 points and also grabbing five rebounds.
Just like the women's game, the Saints were able to jump out to an early lead, 13-2. Just before the media timeout,
Jyrus Freels was able to finish a tough layup to cut the lead to 16-11.Â
Coming out of the media timeout, Freels finished another layup and McGroarty knocked down a huge three to tie the game at 16, forcing Seward to call their first timeout. On the very next possession,
Tajae Anderson hit a jumper to give the Conquistadors an 18-16 lead with 6:29 left in the half. The Conqs were not ale to grab a lead any larger than two as the Saints then took the lead back and took a four point lead into the locker room.Â
Early in the second half, the Saints pushed their lead to 12, until the Conquistadors finally were able to find their stroke. After two free throws by
Kevin Howard cut the lead to five, Howard then put up a three pointer on the very next possession. As the ball came off the rim, McGroarty was able to find a lane to the basket and rose high above the rim for a monstrous put-back dunk to cut the lead to three.
Dodge City was able to cut the lead to three two more times, but they could not get any closer as the Saints knocked down their free throws late and extended their lead to 70-64 by the end of the game.
Dodge City is now 5-11 on the year and 3-9 in conference play. They will be in action again on Saturday in Hutchinson, Kan., to take on the Blue Dragons at 7:30 p.m.
