Poor Shooting Dooms DC3 In Road Loss To Red Devils

Box Score IOLA, Kan. - Turning in one of their worst shooting performances of the year, the Dodge City Community College men's basketball team could not find enough points to overcome a pesky Allen County Community College in a 72-61 road loss in Iola, Kansas on Saturday, February 18th.

Despite the loss, the Conquistadors sit at 18-9 overall and 15-8 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and will remain in third-place in the KJCCC regardless of the outcomes of other conference games played tonight. The Red Devils improved to 13-14 overall and 10-13 in the Jayhawk Conference.

Trailing 37-26 at halftime, Dodge City would see their deficit grow to as many as 17 points midway through the second half. DC3 would cut the gap to seven heading into the final minutes before the Red Devils would pull away late by hitting free throws down the stretch.

Poor shooting from beyond the arc would be the main nemesis for the Conquistadors, finishing just three of 24 (12.5%) from three while going 24 of 66 (36.4%) from the floor. After hitting just two of their first 11 treys, DC3 would manage just one made triple in the final 20 minutes on 13 attempts. Allen County would not fare much better from the field by shooting just 32.1 percent from the field, but outscore the Conquistadors by 17 points at the charity stripe.

ACCC would win the rebounding battle by a 46-38 margin and hold a 23-21 advantage in points off the bench. DC3 would be guilty of 14 turnovers compared to 12 for Allen County.

Sophomore Josh Boutte would be one of few bright spots for Dodge City, finishing with a team-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. None of the other Conqs who would receive playing time in the game would reach double-figures as Dayton McGroarty and Trey Grundy III each scored eight points. The Red Devils would be led by a game-high 25 points from DaRon Mims while Ithello Cross grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

The final three-game stretch of the regular season starts on Wednesday evening for Dodge City, when they play host to Independence Community College at the Student Activities Center at 7:30 p.m. DC3 grinded out a 80-73 victory over the Pirates back in January behind a game-high 29 points from Harris Brown. NJCAA Region VI Tournament seeding is still in play for Dodge City, as the Conquistadors can finish no worse than sixth in the KJCCC based on the current standings.
