Conqs Fall to Cowley College, 81-78

Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - Despite leading for over 22 minutes, the Conquistador men's basketball team dropped their fifth straight game on Saturday afternoon, as they fell to Cowley College by a score of 81-78. 

Tajae Anderson missed just two shots on the day, going 6-for-8 from the field and 5-for-5 from the three point line to collect 17 points. Both Dayton McGroarty and Jyrus Freels added 10 points, while Marquis McCray and Kevin Howard grabbed eight rebounds.

Early in the game, neither team could pull away, but Justice Dixon found Tajae Anderson for a three that gave Dodge City a 12-7 lead with 13:34 left in the first half. Cowley cut the lead to three, but three's from Anderson and Dixon quickly pushed the lead back to seven. Dodge City went into the media timeout with a 23-20 lead, and Dixon found Ishawn Murphy for another three to give the Conqs a nine point lead. 

With 5:28 to play in the first half, Tamaje Blackwell gave the Conqs their largest lead of the half at 12, but the Tigers then went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to two with 2:19 left. To finish the half, a layup by Marquis McCray got the lead to eight, but a free throw from Cowley cut it to seven heading into the locker room.

For the first nine minutes of the first half, the Conquistadors were able to hold onto a slim lead, but a jumper by Jeremiah Starks gave the Tigers the lead and Cowley College never looked back. In the next two minutes, the Tigers pushed their lead to eight points, going on a 7-0 run. With 5:22 left in the second half, the Tigers grabbed their largest lead of the game, 75-66, but the Conquistadors were not done. 

Dodge City held the Tigers scoreless for the final 2:11, but it was not enough as the Conqs were able to go on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to three, but a three-point attempt by McGroarty at the buzzer came off the rim, giving Cowley College an 81-78 win. 

Dropping their fifth straight game, the Conqs move to 5-7 on the year and 3-6 in KJCCC play. Dodge City will be in action again on Wednesday as they travel to Otero Junior College at 6 p.m., MST.
