Conqs Battle to Defeat Bethany JV, 65-31

Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - Despite committing 20 turnovers in the game, the Conqs were able to have control throughout the entire game, defeating Bethany College's JV by a score of 65-31 on Monday evening inside the Student Activity Center.

Just like their first game of the season, the scoring was spread out, as three players scored in double digits with Ashley Nelson scoring a game-high 11 points and also grabbing five rebounds. Makaela Ewing and Alec Fitts also added 10 points each. 

Bethany was able to grab an early 6-4 lead on a jumper by Daniela Gutierrez, but the Conqs were able to take the lead back on a basket from Addison Rowley and a free throw from Ewing. For the remainder of the first quarter, the Conq defense allowed just two free throws, as they scored nine more points to take a 16-8 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, neither team was able to buy a bucket for the first two minutes, but a layup from Taylor Lee extended the lead to 18-8. With just under five minutes to play in the quarter, the Swedes were able to score their first basket of the quarter, cutting the lead to 20-10. Dodge City then went on a 15-0 run, capped off by a layup from Ashley Nelson to push the lead to 35-10 with 1:19 left to play in the first half. After two free throws from Bethany, Fitts was able to get a steal and take it all the way to the hole, scoring with just one second left to give the Conqs a 37-12 lead heading into the locker room.

Again in the third quarter, the scoring started late, with Bethany scoring the first points of the second half. The Conq defense came up big again, holding the Swedes scoreless for the next five minutes as DC3 was able to extend their lead to 43-15 with 3:43 left in the third quarter. As the quarter wound down, Dodge City was able to extend their lead to 29 before a free throw by Shakyra Hutchings cut the lead to 49-21.

With the came in hand, a jumpshot by Ashley Nelson late in the fourth quarter gave the Conqs their largest lead of the game at 63-27. Before the game was over, the Conq defense gave up two baskets, but Nelson made a layup of her own with 13 seconds left to give the Conqs a 65-31 win.

The Conqs are now 2-0 on the year and will be in action again on Saturday as they travel to Cloud County Community College for their first KJCCC action of the year at 6 p.m.
