Conqs Lose Heartbreaker to Otero, 86-83

Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - After leading with just over five minutes remaining in the game, the Conqs fell to Otero Junio College on Saturday afternoon inside the Student Activity Center by a score of 86-83.

Again in game two, the Conq offense was spread out as Tajae Anderson led the way with 20 points, with Bruce Hodges, Tamaje Blackwell, Marquis McCray and Hunter Davis all scored in double-figures with 14, 13, 12 and 10 respectively.

On the defensive end, Blackwell also collected five steals on the day while Hunter Davis added three blocks.

Halfway through the first half, a layup by Otero's Marquise Johnson extended the Rattlers lead to five as the Conqs then called their first timeout of the game.

Coming out of the timeout, the Conqs quickly took the lead with 10:39 left in the half on a jumper Davis with the assist coming from Hodges. Just one minute later, the Conqs had extened their lead to 25-20. After the Conqs took the lead Otero quickly turned things around an grabbed a eight point lead with 2:37 left in the half. Dodge City would not go away, as Blackwell hit a big three and Justice Dixon made one free throw just before the half to cut the lead to 40-36 heading into the locker room.

Dodge City came out firing in the second half as Blackwell, Hodges and McCray all combined for seven straight points to take a 43-43 lead with 17:37 to play in the game. After grabbing the lead, the Conqs began to pull away, exteding there lead to 55-46 as Anderson and McCray combined to give the Conqs a 9-1 run. 

After an Otero timeout, the Rattlers were able to cut the lead to four, but the Conqs quickly pushed it back to nine on a huge three-pointer by Dayton McGroarty. Six minutes later, Otero was able to knock down a big free throw, tying the game for the fifth time, at 71. The conqs would not go away, as they were able to take the lead back on a free throw from Davis. 

A layup by the Rattlers gave the lead by to Otero, and the Rattlers never looked back, holding the lead for the remainder of the game. 

With just under three seconds left in the game, Hodges knocked down another big three-pointer to cut the lead to two. After one made free throw by the Rattlers, Hodges threw up a half court heave that hit off the backboard, then the rim, ending the game and giving Otero a 86-83 win.

The Conqs move to 1-1 on the year and will be in action just two days from now as they host Bethany College's JV at 7:30 on Monday night inside the Student Activity Center.
