Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - Free Throws were the story on Wednesday night for the Dodge City women's basketball team. The Conquistadors went just 14-for-28 from the free throw line as they fell to Garden City, 66-57 in the Student Activity Center.
The Broncbusters were also huge on the offensive boards in the first half, grabbing 16 offensive rebounds in the first 20 minutes. The Dodge City defense fixed that in the second half, holding Garden City to just three offensive rebounds.Â
Makaela Ewing led all scorers in the game with 16 points, going 7-for-10 from the field. Addison Rowley was Dodge City's second leading scorer with eight points.Â
Garden City took an early lead in the game, but with 3:30 left in the first quarter, Amour'ee Morrison got a steal and took it coast to coast to give Dodge City their first lead, 8-7. With 22 seconds left in the quarter, Kyra Trice found Ewing for a layup to give Dodge City a three point lead. Garden City then came down and missed a three pointer, but an offensive rebound kept the possession alive, as the Broncbusters drained a buzzer beater to tie the game at 12.
To begin the second quarter, Makaela Ewing knocked down two free throws to give Dodge City their largest lead of the game at four, 19-15. Dodge City held the lead for the remainder of the half until Garden City missed two shots with 11 seconds left, but were able to get two more offensive rebounds and nail one more buzzer beater to give them a 28-26 lead heading into the locker room.
The third quarter was all Garden City. With the game tied at 30 with 7:55 left in the quarter, a layup by the Broncbusters gave them the lead and Garden City never looked back. For the next 3:20, Dodge City scored just one point, while the Broncbusters extended their lead to 43-31. Garden City pushed their lead to 17 with a minute to play in the third quarter, but a free throw from Rowley cut it to 16 heading into the fourth quarter.
Both teams traded points for most of the fourth quarter. The Conqs were able to make a little bit of a run, but were unable to complete the comeback as they cut the lead to nine, but could not get any closer. Garden City finished the game, winning 66-57.
Dodge City moves to 4-4 overall on the year and 2-4 in KJCCC play. They will be in action again on Saturday as they host Butler Community College at 1 p.m., in the Student Activity Center.
