Conqs Lose First KJCCC Game, 88-70

Box Score COFFEYVILLE, Kan. – After a big comeback win on Wednesday, the Conqs were unable to make it happen twice in one week, as they fell to Coffeyville on Saturday evening by a score of 88-70.
 
For the second game in a row, Justice Dixon led the Conqs with 14 points, while Jyrus Freels stepped up big on the boards, collecting six rebounds in the second half.
 
Things were exciting early as a hard foul by Keon Queen of Coffeyville received two technical and was ejected as Tamaje Blackwell also received a technical on the play. A free throw by Justice Dixon gave Dodge City their first lead of the game, 11-10. 
 
Coffeyville then came out of the timeout and went on a 10-4 run to push the lead to 21-14 forcing Dodge City to call their first timeout. After both teams traded points until 36-23, back-to-back fast break layups by Jyrus Freels and Anderson cut the lead to 39-29.
 
A layup from Coffeyville with 17 seconds left and an unconventional three point play by Freels with just under three seconds left sent the teams to the locker room with Coffeyville leading by 10, 41-31.
 
Coffeyville looked to come out hot for the second half, opening up a 6-0 run, but three-straight baskets by Dodge City capped of by a dunk by Hunter Davis cut the lead back to 10, 47-37.
 
The Red Ravens then went on a 9-4 run to push the lead to 56-41 with 14:03 left in the game. After a short run by Dodge City, Coffeyvill was forced to call a timeout as the Conqs cut the lead to 11.
 
With 9:32 left in the game, Bruce Hodges was fouled during a three-point attempt who made all three free throws to cut the lead to just eight. The Red Ravens would not let the Conqs back in, pushing the lead back to 12, but a basket by Davis cut the lead to seven with 5:30 left in the game.
 
With the lead back at ten, TJ Washington converted an unconventional three-point play to put the lead at 72-59. Dodge City then called a timeout and Justice Dixon came out of the timeout hitting a huge three, followed by a layup by Hodges to cut it back to 10.
 
With 2:20 left in the game, a personal foul and a technical foul sent the Red Ravens to the line, making three-of-four free throws to push their lead to 78-64. Besides a three-pointer by Dixon, Coffeyville then milked the clock for the remaining two minutes, coming away with the win, 84-7 and handing Dodge City their first loss in conference play.
 
The Conqs move to 4-2 overall on the year and 2-1 in KJCCC play and will be in action again on Tuesday, as they host Neosho County Community College at 7:30 p.m., in the Student Activity Center.
