Conqs Drop KJCCC Opener vs. Cloud, 79-51

Box Score CONCORDIA, Kan. – The Dodge City women's basketball team fell behind early and was never able to mount a comeback, falling to Cloud County Community College on Saturday night, 79-51.
 
Alec Fitts and Makaela Ewing led the way offensively as both were able to rack up 14 points each while Fitts also led the team with five rebounds. Allie Baker was a big defensive contributor, collecting a team-high three steals.
 
The Dodge City offense came out very slow in the first quarter as Cloud began the game on a 15-0 run before a layup by Kaylee Dale with 3:30 left in the quarter got the Conqs on the board. The Conqs were able to score eight more points by the end of the first quarter to cut the lead to 23-10 heading into the second quarter.
 
The Conqs struck first in the second quarter on a layup from Alec Fitts, but the T-Birds were able to continue to extend their lead to 21 with just over five minutes to play in the first half. With the Thunderbirds leading 40-19, the Conqs then went on a 7-0 run before a layup by Cloud ended the run. By the end of the second quarter, the T-Birds were able to extend the lead back to 20, heading into the locker room up, 46-26.
 
Early in the third quarter, Cloud took a 61-34 lead, but both teams then went scoreless for the next two minutes with the Conqs trailing by 28 with 4:25 left in the quarter. With 1:41 left in the third quarter, the T-Birds grabbed their largest lead of the game through three quarters at 29, but a layup by Taylor Lee cut the lead to 67-40 at the end of the quarter.
 
After the T-Birds grabbed a 31-point lead in the fourth quarter, Fitts collected an unconventional three-point play to cut the lead to 28 as the Conqs called a timeout with 5:18 left to play. Just one minute later, Addison Rowley hit a huge three-pointer to cut the lead to 25. A layup from Dale and a free throw from Fitts helped the Conqs get the lead to 73-51 with 2:55 left in the game. Cloud then finished the game on a 6-0 run to win the game, 79-51.

"We have to get tougher," head coach Zach Loll said. "We can't dig ourselves a hole to start the game like we did. It all starts with our rebounding."
 
The Conqs are now 2-1 on the year and 0-1 in KJCCC play. They will be in action again on November 11 as they host Pratt Community College at 5:30 p.m.
