GAME NOTES: DC3 looks to avenge earlier loss to Garden City

DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College men's basketball team is looking to avenge an earlier loss to Garden City while also staying in the hunt for a top-three seed in the Region VI Tournament when the Conqs travel to take on the Broncbusters 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

- The Conqs moved into fourth place in front of Barton after defeating the Cougars 74-71 on Saturday on the road despite dressing only eight players and being without starting guard James Newton (injury). It was DC3's first win in Great Bend since 2008.
- Securing the win for the Conqs was reserve guard Mario Ponds as the freshman, who had shot just six free throws all year, went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in the final 21.5 seconds. Overall the Conqs shot a season-best 85 percent from the line (17 of 20).
- DC3 sits a game back of Pratt for third place in the KJCCC and 2.5 games behind Hutchinson and Neosho for first with five games to go.
- It was free-throw woes that cost the Conqs in a 74-71 loss to Garden City at home on Jan. 20 as the Conqs went 13-for-28 (46.4 percent) from the line. On the season, the Conqs are shooting 58.7 percent from the line during their seven losses and 64.4 percent in their 18 victories.
- Josh Boutte continues his breakout season as he recorded his 14th double-double this season Saturday. The freshman is averaging 16.0 points (10th in the KJCCC), 10.2 rebounds (first) and 1.4 blocks (fifth) overall this season. His numbers are even better in conference play at 18.5 points (fourth), 11.6 rebounds (first) and 1.9 blocks (third) per game.

- The Conqs are a victory away from securing their first plus-.500 season in KJCCC play since 2006-07 when the Conqs went 12-4 and won the West Division (there are no divisions anymore).
- Coach Kyle Campbell (fourth season) is 67-54 overall and 26-34 in KJCCC play at DC3.

- Garden City didn't play Saturday and is coming off a 79-77 loss last Wednesday to Barton at home. Josh Fleming led the Broncbusters with 23 points, including going 4-for-8 from 3-point range. He also had a team-high five rebounds.
- It was Garden City's second-straight loss and third in its last four games. The Broncbusters are 2-3 since beating the Conqs in Dodge City - falling to Seward County (92-87), Hutchinson (83-64) and Barton while beating Colby (72-65) and Cloud County (73-70).
- Fleming is the lone Garden City player averaging double figures at 16 points per game.
- The Broncbusters are the second-best 3-point shooting team in the conference at 37.1 percent, though they are shooting 32.4 percent in KJCCC play (10th). Garden City also leads the conference in free throw percentage (72.6).
- Garden City is 8-3 at home this season with its losses coming to Barton, Independence and Pratt.

- The Conqs after falling to the Broncbusters at home earlier this season are 8-15 against Garden City since the 2004-05 season. The teams split last season's two games with each team winning on their home court.
