Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- All the momentum seemed to be pointing toward the Dodge City Community College men's basketball team heading into the half after scoring the final four points in the final 23 seconds - capped by a steal and acrobatic, 360-degree dunk by
Jonathan Joseph - to take a 33-29 advantage on Hutchinson into the break.
Unfortunately, that momentum didn't come back from the locker room with the Conquistadors to start the second half.
DC3 went without a field goal for the first 7 minutes, 11 seconds of the second half as the Blue Dragons went on an 18-3 run to seize control of the game and never relinquished it during the Conqs' 83-69 loss Wednesday at the Dodge City Civic Center.
DC3 (17-7 overall, 8-5 KJCCC), which had won three in a row and seven of its last eight, missed its first seven field goal attempts of the second half and eventually shot just 32.3 percent in the final 20 minutes while Hutchinson (22-3, 11-3), a team the Conqs beat in Hutchinson earlier this season, shot a scorching 64.3 percent in the second half to come away with the victory.
"The first four minutes of the second half were very telling of how this was going to go for us," DC3 coach
Kyle Campbell said. "We turned it over three or four times. We had bad possessions and they were able to go on a run. It was the first time in the last eight games where we faced adversity and we didn't fight back."
DC3 closed to within a possession of Hutchinson a pair of times in the second half, but could never get the stop or basket it needed to tie or regain the lead.
Lorenzo Dillard led the Conqs with 21 points to go along with three assists,
Josh Boutte had 18 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks and a steal while
Jeremy Treaudo had 10 points and three steals.
Akbar Hoffman led Hutchinson with 26 points, Samajae Haynes-Jones had 18 points, Bashir Ahmed had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Shakur Juiston had 15 points and six rebounds.
The Blue Dragons finished the game shooting 52.6 percent (30-for-57) while DC3 shot 38.7 percent (24-for-62). Hutchinson was also 17-for-19 (89.5 percent) from the free-throw line while DC3 was 15-for-23 (65.2 percent).
The Conqs return to action 7:30 p.m. Saturday when they travel to take on Barton.
