Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Coming off a loss to last-place Colby at home Wednesday, the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team looked like a different team as it bolted out in front of a Seward County - team receiving votes in the latest NJCAA poll - 33-23 with under 30 seconds left in the first half and with the ball.
But what seemed like a harmless turnover that led to a basket by 6-foot-7 Joanna Grymek at the halftime buzzer turned into the beginning of a 25-6 run by the Saints that lasted to the end of the third quarter that DC3 had no answer for during a 59-52 loss Saturday at the Dodge City Civic Center.
The Conqs (17-12, 7-11) used a strong defensive effort (limiting the Saints to 29.4 percent shooting in the first half) and sharpshooting from beyond the arc (6-for-14 in the first half) to build the lead over Seward (21-7, 13-5) at the break.
But DC3 went cold offensively in the second half (shot 18.2 percent from the field) with Seward's defense having a lot to do with that. The Saints with Grymek and the 6-foot-3 Axelle Bernard blocked 14 Conquistadors shots and altered numerous others.
DC3's
Rachel Slattery had 13 points and 10 rebounds while
Antania Newton had 13 points and was 4-for-9 from long range.
Alexus Johnson also had 12 points for the Conqs.
DC3 had no answer for Grymek as she finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks while Bernard had 14 points, 11 rebounds, six blocks, two assists and a steal.
The Conqs are already locked into the No. 9 seed for the Region VI Tournament with a game left in the regular season and will travel to take on the No. 8 seed on Thursday (that seed is still yet to be determined).
DC3 closes out the regular season Monday on the road at Cloud County.
