Conqs' rally falls short, fall to Pratt in battle for 3rd in KJCCC

DC3's Lorenzo Dillard drives to the basket as Pratt's Brian Wright defends Saturday at the Dodge City Civic Center.
Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Despite not leading a second of the contest, a Jamie Rutherford steal and quick 3-pointer by Jeremy Treaudo with 39 seconds remaining gave Dodge City Community College a chance as it had cut what was once a 13-point, second-half Pratt lead down to a single point at 77-76.

However, after beating the Conquistador press and taking much of the time off the shot clock, the Beavers' Julian Winton hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 11 seconds remaining to end DC3's hopes as it lost to Pratt 82-78 Saturday at the Dodge City Civic Center in a contest that could've moved the Conqs into third place in the KJCCC.

DC3 (19-8 overall, 10-6 KJCCC) entered the contest a game behind Pratt (19-8, 12-4), but its own shooting struggles combined with the Beavers' scorching performance from the field - particularly from beyond the arc in the first half - kept the Conqs behind the entire contest.

"We just got to find a way to get going early," DC3 coach Kyle Campbell said. "It was just dead and we got to find a way to get energy. ... We have to find a way to get guys going early and get the crowd into it. We need to get some life in this place to help us out."

While Pratt finished the game shooting 47.5 percent from the field (29-for-61) and 46.2 percent from 3-point range (12-for-26), those percentages were even better in the first half as the Beavers shot 51.6 percent from the field (16-for-31) and 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from 3-point range. Combine that with DC3 shooting 38.2 percent in the first half (13-for-34) and it led to the Conqs being down 42-33 at the break.

DC3 was down right from the start as Pratt opened the game on a 6-0 run before a Rutherford 3-pointer ended the Beaver streak. DC3 eventually tied the game 11-11 after a Lorenzo Dillard 3-pointer, but Pratt went on an 8-0 run to take the lead for what turned out to be for good.

DC3 trailed by 13 with 8:39 remaining in the second half before slowly cutting the lead. The Conqs had it down 73-70 with 3:03 remaining after a Rutherford three-point play, but two minutes later was behind 77-71 after a pair of Dennis Jones free throws.

That's when a pair of Treaudo free throws with 52 seconds left followed by the Rutherford steal and Treaudo 3-pointer cut the lead to 77-76 before Winton's 3-pointer sealed the game for Pratt.

Dillard paced DC3 with 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Treaudo had 18 points and five rebounds, Rutherford finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals while Josh Boutte had 15 points, 13 rebounds and a block.

Isaiah Bailey led Pratt with 26 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Andrew Newbil had 12 points while Devin Campbell added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.

DC3 returns to action at home 8 p.m. Wednesday against Colby.
