Box Score GARDEN CITY, Kan. -- Trailing by 16 points in the third quarter, the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team appeared as if it may suffer the same fate it did in the Conquistadors' first meeting with Garden City earlier this season when they lost 78-43 in Dodge City.
However a lineup of starting post
Rachel Slattery and four DC3 reserves led a Conqs charge that helped them force overtime against the Broncbusters.
But DC3 just didn't have enough left in the tank as a go-ahead 3-pointer by Garden City with a minute left in the extra period gave the Broncbusters the lead for good during a 73-70 victory Wednesday in Garden City.
The Conqs (16-10, 6-9) started their rally late in the third as a pair of Slattery steals and baskets by
Fantasia Johnson,
Amber Espinosa and
Dasia Johnson cut the Garden City (19-7, 13-2) lead to 47-41 heading into the fourth quarter.
DC3 got as close as one but could never get over the hump until
Dasia Johnson was fouled with 8.6 seconds left and split a pair of free throws to tie the game 65-65 and force overtime (it was also the KJCCC's leading scorer's Shala Dobbins' fifth foul).
In overtime, a pair of Slattery free throws 20 seconds in gave the Conqs their first lead since the 9:11 mark in the first quarter at 67-65.
DC3 led 70-69 with 1:18 remaining before Garden City's Kavita Akula drained a deep 3-pointer with 1:02 remaining to give the Broncbusters a 72-70 advantage.
The Conqs trailed 73-70 with 1.6 seconds left and were taking it out on their own end, but
Antania Newton's 3-point attempt was no good and DC3 dropped its fifth-straight contest.
"I thought we had them down the stretch, especially with Dobbins fouling out," DC3 coach
Mark James said. "But I'm so proud of our team's effort. ... That kind of effort will take us a long way the rest of the season."
Slattery paced DC3 with 20 points and 12 rebounds (she was 14-for-17 from the free-throw line),
Brittany Leonard had 10 points while
Dasia Johnson finished with nine. The Conqs shot 41.5 percent from the field (17-for-41), 30 percent from 3-point range (3-for-10) and 75 percent from the charity stripe (33-for-44).
Dobbins led Garden City with 26 points while Donajsa Scott and Akula each had 13 points. The Broncbusters shot 50 percent from the field (26-for-52), 31.3 percent from 3-point range (5-for-16) and 59.3 percent from the free-throw line (16-for-27).
The Conqs host Pratt 1 p.m. Saturday.
