Box Score GARDEN CITY, Kan. – A strong end to the first half combined with a stellar first six minutes to the second half for the Dodge City Community College men's basketball team turned a two-point advantage into 21 as the Conquistadors cruised over Garden City 84-71 Wednesday in Garden City.
The Conqs (19-7 overall, 10-5 KJCCC), who had lost to Garden City 74-71 at home earlier this season, ended the first half on an 11-4 run to turn a 30-28 advantage into a 41-32 halftime lead before outscoring the Broncbusters (14-12, 6-9) 19-7 through the first six minutes of the second half to build a 60-39 advantage.
Garden City wouldn't closer than 11 points until there was less than 1:30 left in the game as the Conqs won their ninth game in their last 11 contests and secured their first plus-.500 KJCCC record since the 2006-07 season.
"We executed our game plan very well," DC3 coach
Kyle Campbell said. "We were able to make them take a lot of tough shots."
DC3 was led by a career high from
Jamie Rutherford as the sophomore had 26 points to go along with 13 rebounds.
Also with double-doubles for DC3 was
Lorenzo Dillard with 17 points and 11 rebounds while
Josh Boutte had 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Jeremy Treaudo also finished in double figures with 12 points.
The Conqs shot 42.9 percent from the field (27-for-63), 35 percent from 3-point range (7-for-20) and 74.2 percent from the charity stripe (23-for-31). DC3 also dominated the glass, outrebounding Garden City 46-29.
Josh Fleming led Garden City with 16 points. The Broncbusters shot 41.5 percent from the field (27-for-65), 30 percent from 3-point range (6-for-20) and 68.8 percent from the free-throw line (11-for-16).
DC3 returns to action 3 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Pratt in a top-tier KJCCC matchup at the Dodge City Civic Center.
