Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Five Dodge City players reached double figures as the Conquistadors used that balanced effort to pull away from a hot-shooting Cloud County squad in the second half for an 85-73 victory Monday at the Dodge City Civic Center.
DC3 (17-6 overall, 8-4 KJCCC) turned a 38-34 halftime advantage slowly into a double-figure lead following a
Jamie Rutherford 3-pointer with 14:04 left in the game to make it 57-47.
That 3-pointer ignited an 11-0 run over the next three minutes for the Conqs as another Rutherford 3-pointer capped it at the 11:40 mark in the second half to push the DC3 lead over Cloud (8-16, 1-12) to 65-87.
The T-Birds wouldn't get within single digits the rest of the way.
It was their hot 3-point shooting that kept Cloud in the game, however, as it went 7-for-14 from long distance in the first half and 5-for-10 in the second half to finish 50 percent from 3-point range.
But DC3 was nearly as dangerous from beyond the arc, going 12-for-28 - though Conq coach
Kyle Campbell wasn't pleased the number of 3-pointers his team was taking.
"The two things that stick out to me is that we shot 28 3-pointers - which is not our style," Campbell said. "Also we only got to the line 18 times, which means we weren't aggressive. We got lucky tonight. We were able to get some steals and got our press going a little bit. But it didn't feel like we could get in a rhythm tonight."
A trio of Conqs had strong all-around games with
Lorenzo Dillard finishing just short of a triple-double with 17 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, Rutherford had 16 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc and
Josh Boutte - this week's KJCCC Player of the Week - had 18 points, six rebounds and four blocks. Also finishing in double figures for DC3 was
Jeremy Treaudo with 14 points (4-for-9 from 3-point range) and
Jonathan Joseph with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals.
The Conqs shared the ball well Monday with 23 assists on their 31 field goals.
Devonte Dixon led Cloud with 25 points, including going 6-for-6 from 3-point range. Duby Maduegbunam had 15 points and five rebounds while Aamahne Santos had 13 points, eight assists and five rebounds.
The Conqs have a day to prepare for what will likely be a vengeful No. 15 Hutchinson team coming to Dodge City on Wednesday (8 p.m. tip). DC3 defeated the Blue Dragons in Hutchinson earlier this season.
"We are going to get everything Hutch has on Wednesday," Campbell said. "We got to get our minds ready and have a great prep day."
