Box Score GARDEN CITY, Kan. – Playing in their third consecutive mid-week Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference basketball road game, the Dodge City Community College men's basketball team would be clutch at the charity stripe down the stretch in an 80-74 road win at No. 25 Garden City Community College on Wednesday, November 30
th.
DC3 is now 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the KJCCC while the Broncbusters slipped to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
The first 20 minutes of action saw the Broncbusters control the pace of play and jump out to an early 17-13 lead with 11:20 remaining in the first half. The Conquistadors would claw their way back in and cut the lead to 28-22 with just over six minutes remaining in the half before taking a 35-33 lead with 30 seconds left before intermission. Garden City would hit a three at the buzzer to take a 36-35 lead into the locker room.
A quick start to the second half for Dodge City would allow for the Conqs to jump out to a double-digit lead with 13 minutes left in regulation before GCCC would start to make a game of things again. Leading 60-52 at the final media timeout with 9:52 left in the game, the Broncbusters would close the gap to one at 64-63 with 6:22 remaining to force a DC3 timeout. Garden City would regain the lead on a bucket with 5:20 left in the game, as DC3 would again start to struggle to hit shots from the field, allowing the crowd to get back into the game. A pair of free throws by
Harris Brown and a put back by
Dreon Lewis allowed Dodge City to retake the lead at 68-66 with just over four minutes remaining, but the lead would be short-lived as Garden City would again tie things up at 68. Free throws and foul trouble would start to get at both teams with Brown hitting four more big free throws with the second two putting the Conqs up 74-70 with 90 seconds remaining. After the Broncbusters would hit a pair of their own, DC3 would again go up four points on a
Kourtney Ware runner with 46 seconds remaining. Garden City would not be able to hit free throws down the stretch as the Conqs would to come away with the six point victory.
"It was a battle and Garden City is a great team, but for our team to be able to come in and steal one speaks volume about the team buying into what we are trying to do" said head coach
Kyle Campbell in a post-game interview with
Damon Post. "All of our forwards that played tonight were getting after it and really making the difference on the glass to give us the rebounding edge."
The Conqs would only shoot 27 of 68 from the field (39.7%), but make up for it by hitting 14 of 15 second half free throws and finishing 22 of 29 from the charity stripe (75.9%). DC3 would win the rebounding battle 44-40, and force 13 Broncbuster turnovers.
Freshman
Kourtney Ware would lead all scorers with 24 points off the bench and would finish as one of three Conqs in double-figures.
Harris Brown would add 23 points and five assists while
Josh Boutte would haul in 11 boards to go along with 21 points. Garden City was led by Jamar Gilbert who finished with 16 points.
Dodge City will be on the road for a second straight game on Saturday, when they head to El Dorado, Kansas to take on Butler Community College at 8 p.m. The Grizzlies were 90-79 road winners at Independence on Wednesday evening to improve to 3-3 in conference play.
