Conquistador women rally for road win at Independence

DC3's Kyra Fennell, seen earlier this season, had eight points, eight rebounds and three steals Saturday against Independence.
Box Score INDEPENDENCE, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College women's basketball team rallied from a 14-point, second-half deficit to come away with a 73-72 victory on the road against Independence on Saturday.

A 24-4 run by the Conquistadors (14-3, 4-2) that spanned from the third to the fourth quarter turned their double-digit deficit into a lead they held onto to pick up its fourth conference win of the season - the most for the DC3 program in a season since going 5-11 in KJCCC play during the 2006-07 campaign.

"Tonight was a great team win," DC3 coach Mark James said. "I was extremely proud of our team's effort and refusal to quit. We were down 14 in a tough environment without one of our best players and it didn't matter.

"We just simply refused to lose tonight."

The Conqs played without their second-leading scorer and leader in rebounds and blocks in Rachel Slattery.

However, Antania Newton picked up the slack. The sophomore guard scored a game-high 26 points, including going 6-for-10 from 3-point range.

"Antania was phenomenal," James said. "She just put the team on her back tonight and lifted us when we needed it."

Kyra Fennell had eight points, eight rebounds and a team-high three steals for the Conqs, Brittany Leonard had eight points and Fantasia Johnson had seven points, a team-high nine rebounds (including five offensive rebounds) and a steal.

Maressah Milum led Independence (12-5, 3-4) with a team-high 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Once again the Conqs' defense was strong - holding Independence to 36.1 percent shooting and forcing 17 turnovers.

This was the DC3 women's first win over Independence since Dec. 3, 2006 - though the teams have met only two other times since that Conq win (2012 and 2007).

The Conqs travel to take on No. 8 Hutchinson 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
