Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- For a decade, the Dodge City Community College women's basketball program couldn't find a way to get a win against Butler.
But a fantastic defensive effort and a tremendous start Wednesday night at the Dodge City Civic Center finally put the Conquistadors' lengthy losing streak to the Grizzlies to an end.
DC3 limited Butler to 25 percent shooting while jumping out to an 11-0 lead as the Conqs never trailed in a 70-56 victory - snapping their 17-game losing streak to the Grizzlies.
"
I just thought we played really well," DC3 coach Mark James said. "I don't like to take anything away from teams when we lose to them and I think (Butler) coach Mike Helmer would say the same thing about us tonight. I think we just beat them."
The victory moves the Conqs to 13-3 overall (surpassing last season's win total) and 3-2 in KJCCC play (tying last season's conference win total).
The key to the defensive lockdown of Butler (13-4, 3-3) Wednesday night?
"We just focused on not letting their two best players beat us," DC3 sophomore guard Talisha Presley said, who led the Conqs with 22 points - including going 5-for-8 from 3-point range.
Butler's Tamara Lee (12.9 points per game) and Nakylia Carter (10.1) - the Grizzlies' top two scorers - were held to a combined two points on 0-for-9 shooting (Carter hit a pair of free throws) in 56 combined minutes. That defensive effort to start the game helped the Conqs speed out to an 11-0 lead after Presley hit a 3-pointer with 5:13 left in the first quarter. Butler scored its first points on an Imari Bell basket with 4:23 left in the first to make it 11-2.
But the Conqs would go on a 10-3 run the rest of the quarter capped by a trio of points by
Rachel Slattery to give DC3 a 21-5 advantage going into the second. The lead eventually grew to as large as 25 in the second quarter before the Conqs took a 44-20 lead into the break.
DC3 held the Grizzlies to 19.4 percent shooting (7-for-36) from the field in the first half.
"
I thought our defense was tremendous," James said. "We had some different wrinkles for them that we hadn't shown all year long."Butler wouldn't get the lead to less than 20 until the fourth quarter as the Conqs closed out the 14-point victory.
To go along with Presley's 22 points, Slattery finished with 12 points and nine rebounds,
Antania Newton had 10 points and five assists and
Fantasia Johnson finished with seven points, five rebounds and two steals.
Bell led Butler with 14 points and nine rebounds as no other player reached double figures.
The Conqs hit the road Saturday to play Independence at 4 p.m.
