Box Score HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- It was starting to look grim for the Dodge City Community College men's basketball team as an 11-0 Hutchinson run gavethe 10th-ranked Blue Dragons a 56-41 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the game.
Hoping to throw off Hutchinson's rhythm, Conquistador coach
Kyle Campbell and his coaching staff decided to throw a full-court press at the Blue Dragons.
And it worked.
DC3 outscored Hutchinson 44-23 the rest of the way as the Conquistadors handed last week's No. 1 team in the nation its third loss in a row with an 85-79 victory Wednesday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
"We subbed in three guys, decided to go with the press and it gave us some energy," Campbell said. "We started hitting a few shots, Jeremy (Treaudo) hit some big 3s for us and we were just able to chip away at the lead.
It was a Treaudo 3-pointer with 12:40 left in the contest for DC3 (13-5, 4-3) that ended the Hutchinson (16-3, 5-3) run and gave life to the Conquistadors. Thanks to a myriad of Blue Dragon turnovers (they finished with 18 in the game as DC3 turned those into 20 points), the Conqs quickly got back into the game as a tip in by
Josh Boutte with 9:11 left cut the Hutchinson lead to 63-60.
The Conqs weren't able to get over the hump, however, until it was finally tied the game at 71 with under five minutes remaining.
DC3 took its first lead since early in the first half when Treaudo hit his sixth 3-pointer of the contest to make it 77-75 with 3:27 left in the contest as the 6-foot-5 freshman finished with a team-high 18 points.
"(The press) really just brought us to another level," Treaudo said."We knew we had to keep fighting. We talk about it and we work on it in practice and it paid off."
Hutchinson eventually tied the game again at 77 before a
Jamie Rutherford 3-pointer from the left wing gave the Conqs the lead for god at 80-77 with 2:12 left. A Boutte tip in at the 1:21 mark gave the Conqs a two-possession lead and the Blue Dragons never got closer than four the rest of the way.
To go along with Treaudo's 18 points,
James Newton had 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists,
Lorenzo Dillard had 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals, Rutherford had 14 points and Boutte finished with 12 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks.
Bashir Ahmed finished with 32 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead Hutchinson.
The Conqs' bench played a key role, outscoring the Blue Dragon bench 32-10.
DC3 returns home to play KJCCC-leading Barton 3 p.m. Saturday at the Dodge City Civic Center.
